Commission: Reports Nigerian troops kill civilians

LAGOS, Nigeria Nigeria's National Human Rights Commission said Sunday it has credible reports security forces are killing, torturing, illegally detaining and raping civilians in a fight to halt an Islamic uprising in northeast Nigeria that has killed nearly 2,000 people since 2010.

A report by the commission said troops retaliating against civilians have torched homes and tried to hide evidence of gross violations by disposing of bodies.

In the most egregious case, where troops went on a rampage in several villages after a soldier was killed in mid-April in the fishing village of Baga, it quoted police as saying soldiers "started shooting indiscriminately at anybody in sight including domestic animals. This reaction resulted to loss of lives and massive destruction of properties."

The military said 36 people were killed, most of them extremist fighters. Witnesses told the AP at the time that some 187 civilians were killed.

The commission said the killings also came after militants had ransacked an armory, with subsequent reports indicating the extremists enjoyed an increase in the caliber and quantity of weapons and "had become both more organized and emboldened by their apparent successes despite the enhanced security presence."

That contradicted military reports that they have taken control of the region in a military emergency covering thee states and one-sixth of the sprawling country. Instead, they appear to have pushed the fighters into rocky mountains with caves where it is more difficult to flush them out. The extremists regularly attack towns and villages.

The commission, a government body, issued an interim report saying it would finalize it when its investigators are able to visit the area where soldiers have cut mobile phone and Internet connections. A state of emergency was declared May 14 when the government said extremists from the Boko Haram terrorist group had taken control of some towns and villages.

The insurgency poses the biggest threat in years to security in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation of 160 million and the continent's biggest oil producer.

Communities trapped between the Islamic militants and the security forces "reportedly live in desperate fear and destitution," the commission said.

It warned of an imminent public health emergency and food shortages because farmers have been forced from their fields.

Food prices have nearly trebled, the commission said, with a 50-kilogram (110-pound) sack of rice selling for up to 18,000 naira ($112.50) from 7,000 naira ($44).

Some medical experts from the region have reported a notable upsurge in sudden deaths, heart attacks and aneurysms, it said.

Northeast Nigeria already presents "the worst statistics of human development in Nigeria generally," it said.

Maternal mortality rates were three times the national average of 545 deaths for every 100,000 live births, and reports reaching the commission suggest the emergency has even more mothers dying in childbirth.

Northeast Nigeria is the poorest region in the country, with government statistics indicating 75 percent of the population lives from hand to mouth on less than $1 a day.

The commission's interim findings corroborated AP reports from the region. Militants who began by targeting government personnel and health workers - they preach that Western religion and medicine are forbidden - are increasingly targeting civilians in attacks on schools and vaccination campaigns.

"The Commission equally received several credibly attested allegations of gross violations by officials of the JTF (joint task force of police and military), including allegations of summary executions, torture, arbitrary detention amounting to internment and outrages against the dignity of civilians, as well as rape," the rights commission said.

"In particular, we have received persistent and credibly attested allegations of indiscriminate disposal of dead human remains by personnel of both the JTF and the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency."

The military and presidential spokesmen did not respond to requests for comment.

Vatican bank cooperating with Italian probe

An undated photo of Monsignor Nunzio Scarano in Salerno, Italy. A Vatican official already under investigation in a purported money-laundering plot involving the Vatican bank was arrested Friday, June 28, 2013, in a separate operation: Prosecutors allege he tried to bring 20 million euros ($26 million) in cash into Italy from Switzerland aboard an Italian government plane, his lawyer said. Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, a recently suspended accountant in one of the Vatican's main financial departments, is accused of fraud, corruption and slander stemming from the plot, which never got off the ground, attorney Silverio Sica told The Associated Press. He said Scarano was a middleman in the operation: Friends had asked him to intervene with a broker, Giovanni Carenzio, to return 20 million euros they had given him to invest. Sica said Scarano persuaded Carenzio to return the money, and an Italian secret service agent, Giovanni Maria Zito, went to Switzerland to bring the cash back aboard an Italian government aircraft. Such a move would presumably prevent any reporting of the money coming into Italy. The operation failed because Carenzio reneged on the deal, Sica said. (AP Photo/Francesco Pecoraro)

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The troubled Vatican bank says it is cooperating with Italian investigators who arrested a Vatican official over an alleged plot to bring 20 million euros ($26 million) into Italy from Switzerland illegally.

Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, a recently suspended accountant in one of the Vatican's main finance departments, was arrested early Friday along with a secret service agent and a financier.

Vatican bank spokesman Max Hohenberg said the bank was cooperating and that its board had launched an internal investigation.

U.S. name Bylsma coach of 2014 ice hockey team

By REUTERS

Dan Bylsma, coach of the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins, was named head coach of the 2014 U.S. Olympic men's ice hockey team, USA Hockey announced on Saturday.

Bylsma, who won NHL coach of the year honors in 2011, steered the Penguins to the best record in the Eastern Conference during the 2012-13 season and to the conference finals before being swept by the Boston Bruins.

"We're thrilled to have Dan as coach of our men's Olympic team," USA Hockey president Ron DeGregorio said in a statement.

"He's rapidly established himself as one of the most prominent coaches in our country today and we know he'll help put us in the best position of achieving our ultimate goal of bringing home the gold medal."

The United States were runners-up to Canada on the ice at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, losing 3-2 in overtime on a gold-medal winning goal by Sidney Crosby, a member of Bylsma's Penguins team.

Bylsma, who has no international coaching experience, won the 2009 Stanley Cup with the Penguins and Crosby.

"It's an unbelievable honor to be selected to represent our country," Bylsma said. "Together with our coaching staff and management group, I will do everything I can to prepare our team to be in a position to win gold in Sochi."

Bylsma, who employs a flowing offensive style that could be suited to the international game, will be working closely with team general manager David Poile, the GM of the Nashville Predators, and Brian Burke, director of player personnel.

USA Hockey plans to conduct an orientation camp the last week of August at the Washington Capitals' practice facility for prospective players.

The Winter Olympics are scheduled for Feb 7-23 in Sochi, Russia.

How Ira Glass Gets People to Talk

The public radio show This American Life is at once old school and ahead of its time. A weekly hourlong program divided into acts, the show?s stock and trade are character-driven stories that are long on surprising plot twists.?

On its face, a weekly radio documentary program might seem like a holdover from a bygone media era bound inevitably for extinction. But as This American Life founder and host Ira Glass likes to point out, the show?s personal conversational style is perfectly suited to the Internet age. Which may explain why the show, now in its 18th year, has added nearly 1 million weekly listeners online through podcasts and streaming to go along with a base radio audience of about 1.8 million.

As This American Life prepares to put out its 500th episode, Glass sat down with Slate?s Jacob Weisberg to talk about evolution of the program and how he approaches its most critical ingredient, the interview.

In the days ahead, look out for more of our interview with Glass, including some of his favorite highlights from This Amerian Life and how podcasting has helped reinvigorate the program.

Fed officials approve horse slaughterhouse in NM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? Federal officials cleared the way Friday for a return to domestic horse slaughter, granting a southeastern New Mexico company's application to convert its cattle facility into a horse processing plant.

In approving Valley Meat Co.'s plans to produce horse meat, Department of Agriculture officials also indicated they would grant similar permits to companies in Iowa and Missouri as early as next week.

With the action, the Roswell, N.M., company becomes the first operation in the nation licensed to process horses into meat since Congress effectively banned the practice seven years ago.

But the company's attorney said on Friday that he remained skeptical about Valley Meat Co.'s chances of opening any time soon, as the USDA must send an inspector to oversee operations and two animal rights groups have threated lawsuits to block the opening.

"This is very far from over," attorney Blair Dunn said. "The company is going to plan to begin operating in July. But with the potential lawsuits and the USDA ? they have been dragging their feet for a year ? so to now believe they are going to start supplying inspectors, we're not going to hold our breath."

The company has been fighting for the permit for than a year, sparking an emotional debate over whether horses are livestock or domestic companions.

The decision comes more than six months after Valley Meat Co. sued the USDA, accusing it of intentionally delaying the process because the Obama administration opposes horse slaughter.

The Justice Department moved Friday to dismiss the case. Dunn said he would fight to keep it open until all issues, including attorneys' fees, are resolved.

Valley Meat Co. wants to ship horse meat to countries where people cook with it or feed it to animals.

The plant would become the first horse slaughterhouse to operate in the country since Congress banned the practice by eliminating funding for inspections at the plants. Congress reinstated the funding in 2011, but the USDA has been slow in granting permits, citing the need to re-establish an oversight program.

The USDA said it also expects to issue permits next week for Rains Natural Meats in Missouri and Responsible Transportation in Iowa.

"Since Congress has not yet acted to ban horse slaughter inspection, (the agriculture department) is legally required to issue a grant of inspection today to Valley Meats in Roswell, N.M., for equine slaughter," USDA spokeswoman Courtney Rowe said.

"The administration has requested Congress to reinstate the ban on horse slaughter. Until Congress acts, the Department must continue to comply with current law."

The Obama administration's budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year eliminates funding for inspections of horse slaughterhouses, which would effectively reinstate the ban. And both the House and Senate agriculture committees have endorsed proposals that would cut the funding. But it is unclear when and if an agriculture appropriations bill will pass this year.

A return to domestic horse slaughter has divided horse rescue and animal welfare groups, ranchers, politicians and Indian tribes about what is the most humane way to deal with the country's horse overpopulation and what rescue groups have said are a rising number of neglected and starving horses as the West deals with persistent drought.

The Humane Society of the United States and Front Range Equine Rescue said they would follow through on plans to file suit to try to block the resumption of horse slaughter.

"The USDA's decision to start up domestic horse slaughter, while at the same time asking Congress to defund it, is bizarre and unwarranted," Jonathan Lovvorn, senior vice president and chief counsel for animal protection litigation at the humane society, said in a statement. "Slaughter plants have a history of polluting their communities and producing horse meat that is tainted with a dangerous cocktail of banned drugs. We intend to hold the Obama administration accountable in federal court for this inhumane, wasteful and illegal decision."

Proponents of a return to domestic horse slaughter point to a 2011 report from the federal Government Accountability Office that shows horse abuse and abandonment have been increasing since slaughter was banned in 2006, leaving fewer humane options for horse owners who can't afford to care for or euthanize their animals.

They say it is better to slaughter the animals in humane, federally regulated facilities than have them abandoned to starve across the drought-stricken West or sold at auction houses that then ship them to inhumane facilities in Mexico.

The number of U.S. horses sent to other countries for slaughter has nearly tripled since 2006, the report says. Many humane groups agree that some of the worst abuse occurs in the slaughter pipeline. Many are pushing for a ban on domestic slaughter and a ban on shipping horses to Mexico and Canada.

Gov. Susana Martinez, a horse lover, said "creating a horse slaughter industry in New Mexico is wrong and I am strongly opposed."

New Mexico Land Commissioner Ray Powell, a veterinarian, called on local, state and federal leaders to "work together to create solutions and provide sustainable funding to care for or humanely euthanize these unwanted horses. Continuing to ignore the plight of starving horses, creating a new horse slaughter plant, or exporting unwanted horses to Mexico won't solve this problem."

The Yakama Nation in Washington state applauded the USDA's decision. Tribal Council Chairman Harry Smiskin said "we hope that such a plant can also open somewhere in the Pacific Northwest to assist us in dealing with over 12,000 feral horses that are severely damaging our homelands."

In a news release, he said the horses have overgrazed the land, leaving some valleys and hillsides without grass or plant life.

Iraq bombings target soccer fans, kill 16 in cafes

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi officials say a series of bombings targeting soccer fans has struck cafes in and around Baghdad, killing 16 and wounding dozens.

Another blast struck the Shiite town of Jbala, about 50 kilometers (35 kilometers) south of Baghdad, killing 8.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualty toll. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information to journalists.

Wounded vets' custom cycles stolen in Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? Police say a custom-made mountain bike belonging to a double-amputee war veteran has been recovered after being reported missing in Anchorage.

The Anchorage Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/138Wj03 ) four other bikes reported stolen by the nonprofit Ride 2 Recovery remain missing.

Police spokeswoman Dani Myren says authorities received a call Wednesday morning from a person who found a bike propped against a "No Parking" sign in an Anchorage park. The bike belongs to Army Staff Sgt. Matt DeWitt.

Police say DeWitt's $19,000 mountain bike was believed taken from a locked U-Haul at a downtown parking lot early Tuesday. The bike has controls that allow DeWitt to shift with his knees and brake with his back.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Someone broke into a U-Haul trailer in a downtown parking lot and stole five bikes belonging to wounded veterans in Alaska to train for a race, the group that organized the trip said.

The bikes are valued in the tens of the thousands of dollars and include one custom-made for Staff Sgt. Matt DeWitt, who lost both arms below the elbow to a rocket-propelled grenade in Iraq in 2003, the Anchorage Daily News reported (http://bit.ly/14WpBwz). The bike, which police said is valued at $19,000, has controls that allow the double-amputee to shift with his knees and brake with his back.

"No one else can really ride it," said DeWitt, of Weare, N.H., who had used the bike only a few times before it disappeared.

The 26-person group arrived Sunday and Monday to begin the trip, sponsored by the Tatitlek Corp.

Tiffini Skuce of Ride 2 Recovery, the nonprofit that organized the trip, said participants are mostly veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, with some suffering from traumatic physical injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injuries.

DeWitt said the group spent Monday riding trails at Kincaid Park. That night, the bikes were locked in a U-Haul in a downtown hotel parking lot, Skuce said. They were last seen around midnight, and when riders began unloading the bikes the next morning, they noticed the lock and some of the bikes gone.

"It's heartbreaking because it's injured veterans who are trying to carry on and better themselves and then their bikes are gone," she said.

Skuce said the group filed a police report Tuesday. Rentals temporarily replaced other bikes so riders could still train, but they're not as nice as the ultra-light, high-end bikes belonging to the riders, she said. Also, DeWitt, who is training for a long-distance, high-altitude race in Colorado, can't ride a rental.

The group planned to head to Seward Wednesday, Skuce said.

According to the police report, the missing bikes include: a Diamondback Sortie alloy bike with the word "Thompson" on the handlebars and Shimano electric shifting; a custom "Stealth" Ride 2 Recovery bike; a Raleigh Talus black bike with blue accents; a Felt black carbon fiber bike and a Cannondale 29 white bike with black lettering. Castro said all the bikes also have "Ride 2 Recovery" stickers.

"Not a way to welcome them to Alaska," she said.

Who Would You Cast In a Live-Action Jetsons Movie?

Kanye West is making the rounds again claiming that he's the creative director for a live-action Jetsons movie that's currently (sort-of, kind-of, not really) in development. Beyond the fact that "creative director" isn't actually the title for a job on any movie ? but something you'd find at an advertising agency ? consider this retrofuture blogger skeptical that a Jetsons movie will ever see the light of day.

BlackBerry releases Secure Work Space for iOS and Android (video)

Blackberry releases Secure Work Space for iOS and Android

Paranoid corporate types living in fear of bring-your-own-device employees can soon relax: BlackBerry has just launched its Secure Work Space app, right on schedule. It'll allow organizations to manage and secure Google and Apple devices through BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) 10, which forms the mobile backbone of many a company's internal network. By using it, personnel without BlackBerry devices like the Z10 or Q10 will gain a way to check their company's calendars, email and organizers without fear of snooping. At the same time, IT types will be able to securely see, manage and update all Android and Apple devices network-wide. For its part, the Waterloo outfit should gain another source of revenue through the software (which consists of a suite of apps and BES 10.1 update), even with companies that haven't invested in its devices. For more info about the software or to grab a trial, check the source.

Watch Microsoft Unveil Windows 8.1 Preview Live Here

microsoft build 2013 logoMicrosoft is kicking off its Build developer conference today at 9am. The company has already announced that it will unveil Windows 8.1 in a Preview version today, but beyond that, though, we actually don't know all that much about Microsoft's plans for today's event, including who will keynote it. It's a fair guess that Julie-Larson Green, who is now in charge of Microsoft's Windows Division, will be there, but in the past, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has also regularly made appearances at Build (he does have a thing for developers, after all).

Hearing set for man in Ohio's captive women case

CLEVELAND (AP) ? The case against a man charged with holding three women captive in his Cleveland home for over a decade is headed back to court.

The sharing of evidence between prosecutors and defense lawyers is among the issues before Judge Michael Russo in Cleveland in the hearing Wednesday morning for Ariel Castro.

The 52-year-old Castro has pleaded not guilty to a 329-count indictment, with even more charges still possible.

The defense wants county prosecutor Tim McGinty to take the death penalty off the table to clear the way for a plea deal. McGinty hasn't said if he'll pursue a death sentence for an alleged forced miscarriage involving one victim.

Castro was arrested after a woman broke through a door and yelled to neighbors for help last month.

Tightrope walk over Ariz. gorge draws 13M viewers

LITTLE COLORADO RIVER GORGE, Ariz. (AP) ? Aerialist Nik Wallenda's tightrope walk over a gorge near the Grand Canyon drew nearly 13 million viewers to the live television broadcast.

The Discovery Channel said Monday that the quarter-mile stunt at the Little Colorado River Gorge was among the most highly viewed shows in the station's history.

It also prompted 1.3 million tweets Sunday, making it one of the top trending topics.

Wallenda took 22 minutes to cross the 2-inch-thick steel cable, 1,500 feet above the dry river bed. He did it without a harness or safety net.

The well-known daredevil contended with the wind and repeatedly called on God to calm the swaying cable.

He wore a microphone and two cameras, one that looked down on the river bed and one that faced straight ahead.

Vitamin D improves mood and blood pressure in women with diabetes

June 25, 2013 ? In women who have type 2 diabetes and show signs of depression, vitamin D supplements significantly lowered blood pressure and improved their moods, according to a pilot study at Loyola University Chicago Niehoff School of Nursing.

Vitamin D even helped the women lose a few pounds.

The study was presented at the American Diabetes Association 73rd Scientific Sessions in Chicago.

"Vitamin D supplementation potentially is an easy and cost-effective therapy, with minimal side effects," said Sue M. Penckofer, PhD, RN, lead author of the study and a professor in the Niehoff School of Nursing. "Larger, randomized controlled trials are needed to determine the impact of vitamin D supplementation on depression and major cardiovascular risk factors among women with Type 2 diabetes."

Penckofer recently received a four-year, $1.49 million grant from the National Institute of Nursing Research at the National Institutes of Health to do such a study. Penckofer and her Loyola co-investigators plan to enroll 180 women who have type 2 diabetes, symptoms of depression and insufficient levels of vitamin D. Women will be randomly assigned to receive either a weekly vitamin D supplementation (50,000 International Units) or a matching weekly placebo for six months. The study is titled "Can the Sunshine Vitamin Improve Mood and Self Management in Women with Diabetes?

About 1 in 10 people in the United States has diabetes, and the incidence is projected to increase to 1 in 4 persons by 2050. Women with type 2 diabetes have worse outcomes than men. The reason may be due to depression, which affects more than 25 percent of women with diabetes. Depression impairs a patient's ability to manage her disease by eating right, exercising, taking medications, etc.

Many Americans do not get enough vitamin D, and people with diabetes are at especially high risk for vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency. Reasons include limited intake of foods high in vitamin D, obesity, lack of sun exposure and genetic variations.

The pilot study included 46 women who were an average age of 55 years, had diabetes an average of 8 years and insufficient blood levels of vitamin D (18 ng/ml). They took a weekly dose (50,000 International Units) of vitamin D. (By comparison, the recommended dietary allowance for women 51 to 70 years is 600 IU per day.)

After six months, their vitamin D blood levels reached sufficient levels (average 38 ng/ml) and their moods improved significantly. For example, in a 20-question depression symptom survey, scores decreased from 26.8 at the beginning of the study (indicating moderate depression) to 12.2 at six months (indicating no depression. (The depression scale ranges from 0 to 60, with higher numbers indicating more symptoms of depression.)

Blood pressure also improved, with the upper number decreasing from 140.4 mm Hg to 132.5 mm Hg. And their weight dropped from an average of 226.1 pounds to 223.6 pounds.

Penckofer is internationally known for her research on vitamin D, diabetes and depression. In October, she will be inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing for her scientific contributions in improving the health and quality of life of women with chronic disease. And she recently was appointed as the first nurse researcher to the Chicago Diabetes Center for Translational Research.

Co-authors of the study are Todd Doyle, PhD, Patricia Mumby, PhD, Mary Byrn, Mary Ann Emanuele, MD and Diane Wallis, MD.

Snowden's stealthy exit: How WikiLeaks and maybe Russia helped

The NSA leaker is traveling to Moscow en route to a third country. Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman told journalists Sunday that he knows nothing of Snowden's travel plans.

Mr. Snowden left his temporary refuge in Hong Kong?Sunday?morning, just one day after the US government charged him with espionage and launched an urgent effort to extradite him from the former British colony. He boarded an Aeroflot flight to Moscow, and news reports say he has an onward ticket with the Russian national airline to fly to Cuba?on Monday.

In addition to the clear suggestion of official Russian aid with the fleeing whistleblower's logistics, Snowden appears to have received help from a more kindred source. WikiLeaks tweeted?Sunday?that it had "assisted Mr. Snowden's political asylum in a democratic country, travel papers and safe exit from Hong Kong."

Kremlin authorities earlier hinted that Russia might be willing to grant asylum to Snowden. But President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told journalists?Sunday?that he knows nothing about the NSA leaker's travel plans.

Authorities in Hong Kong announced Snowden's departure?Sunday?in an official statement?that noted he had left "on his own accord for a third country through a lawful and normal channel," and added that US authorities had already been informed.

The statement said the urgent US warrant to arrest Snowden could not be carried out "since the documents provided by the US Government did not fully comply with the legal requirements under Hong Kong law.... ?As the HKSAR [Hong Kong] Government has yet to have sufficient information to process the request for provisional warrant of arrest, there is no legal basis to restrict Mr Snowden from leaving Hong Kong."

The statement included an extraordinary passage that may go far toward explaining why Hong Kong, which does have an extradition treaty and good relations with the US, appears to have turned so uncooperative in Snowden's case: "Meanwhile, the HKSAR Government has formally written to the US Government requesting clarification on earlier reports about the hacking of computer systems in Hong Kong by US government agencies. The HKSAR Government will continue to follow up on the matter so as to protect the legal rights of the people of Hong Kong."

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange said in a statement?Sunday?that his organization was providing legal and logistical help to move Snowden to a safe haven in a "democratic country."

"Mr. Snowden is flying in an Aeroflot aircraft over Russian airspace, accompanied by WikiLeaks legal advisers," Mr. Assange said.

Upon arrival in Moscow he will be "met by diplomats from the country that will be his ultimate destination. Diplomats from that country will accompany him on a further flight to his destination," he added. The third country is still not named, but experts say it's most likely to be Venezuela or Ecuador.

"Owing to WikiLeaks' own circumstances, we have developed significant expertise in international asylum and extradition law, associated diplomacy and the practicalities in these matters," Assange said.?"I have great personal sympathy for Ed Snowden's position. WikiLeaks absolutely supports his decision to blow the whistle on the mass surveillance of the world's population by the US government."

Snowden's latest revelations, published in Hong Kong's South China Morning Post?on Sunday, indicate that US intelligence agencies have been hacking Chinese mobile phone companies to steal millions of text messages.

Russian security expert Andrei Soldatov, who edits Agentura.ru, an online journal that focuses on the secret services, says that in addition to granting Snowden safe passage to Cuba on an Aeroflot jetliner, Russia may have played a deeper role in helping to arrange his flight.

He suggests that the Kremlin's English-language satellite news network, RT, which enjoys very close relations with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, could have used its offices to help Wikileaks hook up with Snowden in Hong Kong,?

"There are reports that Assange's assistant, Sarah Harrison, is flying on the same plane with Snowden," says Mr. Soldatov.?"Involvement of RT would make sense, since RT has close cooperation with Assange, and he did a series of programs for them last year [Russia gives WikiLeaks' Julian Assange a TV platform]. The involvement of WikiLeaks requires no explanation. It wants to maintain itself as the key center for all disclosures of the kind that Snowden brought to the world," he adds.?

Soldatov says Russian assistance is also logical, for wider reasons than just an opportunity to stick it to Uncle Sam.

"Russia and China have been involved in a so-far unsuccessful struggle to change the rules of the Internet, by taking control of it away from the US-based Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and giving its functions to a wider, non-US-based entity," he says.

"The Russians and Chinese have been posing, for these purposes, as big defenders of Internet freedom. This political context helps to explain RT's close relations with WikiLeaks as well.... So, it makes sense for them to help Snowden too. Russian authorities see an opportunity to present themselves as the new center of refuge for whistleblowers against US dominance in Cyberspace. It's a coup for them," he adds.??

Discovery Communications' John Hendricks: From Huntsville to ...

"Why can't this be on TV? That was in Huntsville at UAH. That was a lingering question that was on the road to the Discovery Channel."

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - John Hendricks was a history student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in the 1970s when he had an idea that would change television. Today, Hendricks is the founder and chairman of Discovery Communications, a worldwide empire with more than 100 channels and 1.5 billion viewers. Then, he was a work-study student helping his professors find documentaries to screen in their classes.

"As I was looking through all this volume of catalogs for documentary films that were available, I just had this question," Hendricks said in an interview this month. "Why can't this be on TV? That was in Huntsville at UAH. That was a lingering question that was on the road to the Discovery Channel."

Hendricks looks back at building Discovery and growing up in Alabama during the space race and the Civil Rights Era in the new memoir "A Curious Discovery: An Entrepreneur's Story" being published June 25 by HarperCollins. The book tells the stories behind some of the Discovery networks' most popular shows, including "Trading Spaces," "The Crocodile Hunter" and "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," and it's a how-to manual for would-be entrepreneurs.

In the book, Hendricks writes about his bad business moves as well as his good ones, including the day Discovery faced bankruptcy because his sole source for a new round of funding said "no" at the last moment. "All that counted was the Chronicle investment was dead," he writes, "and stupidly, I now realized, I had failed to use the intervening months to solicit any other investor prospects."

"For something to be useful, people need to know the whole story," Hendricks said this month. "If you're going to have three or four successes in your life, you've probably had five to 10 significant failures."

The book contains enough detail about Hendricks' path to be studied at business schools, but a man who has worked with everyone from Walter Cronkite and "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin to Oprah Winfrey also has stories to tell. Among others, he recounts the terrible day he learned Irwin had died from stingray barb, and he takes readers inside his long, close relationship with Walter Cronkite.

Some of Hendricks' best stories involve expanding Discovery's portfolio from documentaries aimed at 25 percent of the viewing public - his original audience - to reality programs like "Trading Spaces," and, eventually, shows like "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo." Now, Discovery is now a major source, under its different network banners, of programs not too far from ones Hendricks once dismissed as "Tattoo TV."

Part of the reason for the stretch was economic, and again Hendricks is direct. "For us to be a global force in programming and to have the resources that we can continue to undertake very expensive productions like 'North America, which is now running on Discovery," he said in the interview, "we have to break beyond that 25 percent and reach over and develop a portfolio of networks that also work within (the) amusement and entertainment platforms."

But Hendricks has come to appreciate reality TV in all of its dimensions, and he said that happened in stages. First, Hendricks said he realized that shows about people like Cake Boss Buddy Valastro and Georgetown Cupcake founders Katherine Berman and Sophie LaMontagne were not only incredibly popular, but inspirational. They tell the stories of legitimate American entrepreneurs whose paths aren't that different from Hendricks' own. Later, Hendricks said he came to see shows about different, even exotic lifestyles - whether Amish teenagers or Honey Boo Boo - as legitimate ways to satisfy legitimate viewer curiosity about their world.

Hendricks was careful to put a fence around the original Discovery brand and spin off new networks to showcase new programming. He cites a big-time model for that, too.

"You can think of it this way," Hendricks said in the interview. "Disney Corp. has a wonderful legacy of that all-family brand of Disney, but at one point to be able to survive and grow and prosper, Disney had to be able in their motion picture business to offer R-rated films. So, they did that through a number of separate divisions and studios that they owned that didn't carry the Disney brand. For years, they owned Miramax and Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures."

Today, Hendricks stays busy with Discovery Communications and its ongoing challenges in a changing media world. When he's not in the corporate offices outside Washington, he's involved in developing Gateway Canyons, a Colorado resort designed to offer guests "curiosity adventures" on land protected from development. He travels for work and to satisfy his own curiosity - a recent trip to Tanzania included time spent with the last hunter-gather tribe in Africa - and visits Huntsville to see his brother-in-law Jim Sisson, lead engineer for the Apollo program's lunar rover, and his nephews Martin and Alan. Hendricks' sister, Linda, died some years ago.

Hendricks life in Huntsville echoes through the book, and longtime residents will enjoy his memories of Budd's and Bill's Men's Wear, clothing stores where he worked; the day Huntsville schools integrated in 1963; and his parents' pleasure at seeing his picture in The Huntsville Times for winning a local insurance agents' essay contest on "The Free Enterprise System."

"It's funny how the tiniest event can change the trajectory of one's life," Hendricks writes in his book. "Writing that essay was one of those moments, and I've often thought about how deeply it influenced everything that came after. Putting those few hundred words on paper forced me to really think about what motivates people to accomplish something in life, to invent or adapt new products, and to create experiences that did not exist before."

Hendricks says growing up in Huntsville was key to what he has accomplished.

"If you look through the book," he said in the interview, "there's a kind of continuing thread. I'm going to name-drop here, and I'm so sorry to do it, but Oprah had read the book and called me. And she said, 'John what you've done is a kind of business memoir, but what you've done is capture a thread: What was the thread that led to Discovery?'

"I have to say that Huntsville was just a big part of that thread," Hendricks said. "It was such an inspiring place to grow up."

Huawei Ascend P6 solves 4 x 4 Rubik's Cube in just 50 moves, considers meaning of life video

Okay, it might not be the fastest phone-cubing you've ever seen (or the funkiest,) but it's likely some of the shrewdest. Using an Ascend P6 at its heart, "MultiCuber 3" is the latest contraption from serial cube-coder (and ARM Engineer) David Gilday which combines Lego Mindstorms, algorithms and "because it's there" style optimism in equal measures. A custom app snaps the unsolved cube from all sides, to understand the starting point, then figures out the quickest path to color-coded harmony. Gilday claims that most human cubers would take about 120 moves to solve the 4 x 4 puzzle, making MultiCuber 3's 50 somewhat impressive. Watch the whole thing unfold in the video past the break, complete with appropriately euphoric soundtrack.

Gaza's Hamas rulers execute 2 for spying

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? The militant Islamic group Hamas that rules Gaza says it executed two men whom it accuses of passing intelligence to Israel.

The Hamas interior ministry issued a brief statement saying the men were hanged in Gaza's central jail Saturday morning.

Hamas did not release their names but said they were executed after a "legal process."

Hamas overran Gaza in 2007, ousting forces from the Fatah party led by Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in bloody street battles. Abbas has since governed only in parts of the West Bank, and Hamas rules Gaza.

The hangings bring the total of executions carried out by Hamas since the takeover for spying or "collaborating" with Israel to 16. Dozens of others have been killed by Hamas gunmen without trials.

Gunmen kill nine foreign tourists, two locals in northern Pakistan

By By Jibran Ahmed

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Gunmen stormed a mountaineering base camp in northern Pakistan on Sunday and shot dead nine foreign trekkers and a Pakistani guide as they rested during an arduous climb up one of the world's tallest peaks, police said.

The night-time raid - which killed five Ukrainians, three Chinese and a Russian - was among the worst attacks on foreigners in Pakistan in a decade and underscored the growing reach of militants in a highland region once considered secure.

One of the victims also held a U.S. passport, a U.S. official said, without giving further details.

Police said a 15-strong gang of attackers wearing uniforms used by a local paramilitary force arrived at about 1 a.m. at a group of tents and ramshackle huts used by hikers scaling the flanks of the snow-covered 8,125-metre Nanga Parbat peak.

The assailants shot dead a Pakistani guard and held other workers at gunpoint, a senior official from the northern Gilgit-Baltistan province said. A Chinese climber managed to escape.

"The gunmen held the staff hostage and then started killing foreign tourists and made their escape," the official said.

It was the first time foreign tourists had been attacked in the province of Gilgit-Baltistan, where the convergence of the Hindu Kush, Karakoram and Himalayan ranges creates a stunning landscape explored by only a trickle of the most intrepid mountaineers.

Pakistan's Taliban movement and a smaller militant group both claimed responsibility.

The shootings, which followed several deadly bombings in different parts of Pakistan in the past week, pose a fresh challenge for the new government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is battling accusations that his calls for dialogue with insurgents amount to appeasing violent extremists.

The deaths of the Chinese are a particular blow for Pakistan, which hosted Chinese Premier Li Keqiang last month in a bid to boost trade ties with the Asian giant via their shared border in Gilgit-Baltistan.

China issued a statement condemning the attack and calling for Pakistan to "severely punish" the perpetrators.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan told parliament he had sacked Gilgit-Baltistan's police chief and another provincial official, an unusual step in Pakistan where senior officials are rarely held accountable for lapses in security.

The move did little to silence critics who asked how gunmen could have slipped past security forces at check points meant to scrutinize visitors to the sensitive mountain region bordering the disputed territory of Kashmir.

CONFLICTING CLAIMS

There were conflicting claims of responsibility for the attack. A Pakistani militant group known as Jundullah, with a track record of attacks in the province, was the first to say it was behind the raid.

"These foreigners are our enemies and we proudly claim responsibility for killing them, and will continue such attacks in the future," Jundullah spokesman Ahmed Marwat told Reuters by telephone.

The same group has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks in northern Pakistan in recent years, mostly on members of Pakistan's Shi'ite Muslim minority.

Pakistan's Taliban movement, which has its center of gravity closer to the Afghan border, said it had shot the trekkers in retaliation for a U.S. drone strike in May that killed its second in command, Wali-ur-Rehman.

"We wanted to seek revenge for the killing of our leader in the drone attack," said Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan. "Our attacks on foreigners will continue to protest drone strikes."

It was not immediately possible to reconcile the competing claims. Jundullah and the much larger Pakistani Taliban are among loosely aligned militant groups that frequently share personnel, tactics and agendas. Claims for specific incidents are often hard to verify.

Recent attacks by Pakistani militant groups have tended to focus on security forces and religious minorities, particularly Shi'ites, but foreigners have also been targets in the past.

In 2002, 11 French engineers and technicians working on the construction of submarines for the Pakistan navy were killed along with three Pakistanis in a suicide bombing outside a hotel in the port city of Karachi. In 2009, gunmen attacked the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team in the eastern city of Lahore.

Last weekend, in the southwestern city of Quetta, a suicide bomber attacked a bus carrying women students and then gunmen stormed the hospital treating survivors. More than 20 people were killed.
