Joel Ewanick, the agent of change brought in by General Motors just over two years ago to shake up its moribund marketing operations, has unexpectedly resigned.
In a terse statement issued Sunday evening the maker said only that the 52-year-old executive ?has elected to resign immediately.? Alan Batey, GM?s vice president of U.S. Sales and Service, will step in as global marketing chief on an interim basis.
Exactly what led to Ewanick?s sudden departure isn?t clear but it takes even those working close to the marketing czar by surprise.??In fact, it appears to have taken Ewanick himself by surprise.??The former Hyundai marketing chief appeared on the Internet TV show Autoline After Hours barely a week ago and it was clear, ?This was not a guy who saw this coming,? said host John McElroy.
A report in the online edition of the Wall Street Journal suggests the departure was a result of an unspecified confrontation between Ewanick and GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson and, according to several sources, as recently as this morning it was under discussion whether the marketing chief?s departure would be described as voluntary or if GM would say he had been terminated.

Those moves triggered angry responses, Facebook management, for example, going directly to Akerson hoping to reverse the embarrassing decision -- which became fodder for headlines just days before the social media site?s disastrous IPO.
Not everyone has been impressed.???I just don?t see the work,? said a senior Detroit ad agency executive asking not to be named.??The exec pointed to a series of ads produced under Ewanick?s tenure that could hardly be differentiated from what the Chevy brand aired prior to the marketing shake-up.

The question is whether Joel Ewanick has done a good job of taking the Chevrolet and Cadillac brands global. But Ewanick was also in charge of marketing abroad and GM is having a disastrous time in Europe, where it is expected to post several billion dollars in losses this year.
That has led to a series of additional personnel moves including the recent ouster of GM Europe CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke and several of his top lieutenants.
But the shake-ups have been coming at home, as well.??In recent weeks a number of well-known executive have resigned or retired, including Chevy Volt program chief Tony Posawatz, Cadillac?s vehicle chief Dave Leone, and David Lyon, who was set to head design for German-based Opel.

Lindland and several other observers contacted by TheDetroitBureau.com said another odd sign was the fact that normally knowledgeable inside company sources admitted being completely in the dark about the latest development.??Even the normally in-tune GM PR department was apparently caught by surprise.
One source indicated that it was only decided hours before a press release finally went out that Ewanick?s departure would be described as a ?voluntary? resignation.??That, said several observers, raises questions about whether there was more behind the departure than simply a disagreement over policy.?
Going forward, it remains to be seen what sort of ripple effect Ewanick?s resignation will have.??Chris Perry, one of his top lieutenants from Hyundai came over to GM to run the Chevrolet brand.??Meanwhile, the entire General Motors marketing operation has been reshaped in Ewanick?s image, including a controversial new entity combining teams from several different major ad agencies put together to handle the Chevy account.
It?s clear that the impact of the Sunday announcement will be felt and analyzed for some time to come.

The Sprint Galaxy Nexus update that was scheduled to begin today has started rolling out, and along with the listed fixes, such as RSSI indicator fixes and LTE defaulting to on, there's a special gift that Samsung and Sprint didn't bother to mention -- local search has been removed from the device.
Yesterday, all models of the Galaxy Nexus -- the Google Play takju version, the various GSM yakju builds and variants, and the CDMA/LTE versions -- had universal search. That means you could search the web and things like contacts or media files all from the same spot. Apple and their lawyers take offense to that, and went as far as blocking sales of the takju model direct from Google for a little while. We get it -- laws are laws, and you have to follow them when they are valid. We hope this particular case is made invalid, but until then things are what they are. We don't like it, but we understand it.
The problem here is that nobody is telling us that updates are removing capabilities from our phones. We saw it with the Galaxy S III, though Samsung claims the international model was changed in error, and now we're seeing it on the Nexus models. Samsung, Sprint, Google, (and likely all the other US carriers) please tell us you're taking away features before you sneak in and do it. Is that too much to ask?

Car makers have been peddling wireless pedestrian avoidance systems almost as long as there have been automobiles. (We believe one of the earliest was called the "side view mirror.") GM's new experiment though, differs from other implementations by skipping out on the 3G, cameras and radar -- instead going for a model built around WiFi Direct. The peer-to-peer 802.11 standard hasn't exactly set the world on fire, but the WiFi Alliance is diligently tweaking the platform and apparently GM thinks its a perfect match for connecting cars, cyclists and pedestrians to each other. Unlike 3G-based systems, there's little lag between locating and identifying bikes or people crossing the street since the signal doesn't have to be bounced off a satellite. It also has a leg up on radar detection since WiFi can be a two way pipeline -- alerting someone out for a stroll of an oncoming vehicle. Of course, it will be some time before anything like this actually makes it into a production vehicle. But, in the meantime, you can check out the PR and video after the break.

Tonya Reaves, 24, died after Planned Parenthood?s care.
After the abortion, Reaves suffered bleeding. The bleeding continued at Planned Parenthood for five-and-a-half hours before a Fire Department ambulance finally took her to Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 4:30 p.m. according to a report from Steve Miller of the CBS news affiliate WBBM.?It is clear that Planned Parenthood botched the procedure that resulted in uncontrolled bleeding then failed to treat the hemorrhage while Reaves was at their clinic, allowing her to bleed for over five hours before finally calling for help. There can be no doubt that this delay contributed to her death,? said Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue and Pro-Life Nation. ?The injury and the untreated hemorrhage happened at Planned Parenthood, and they are solely responsible for it.?
Once at the hospital, it appears the emergency room staff had to start from scratch to figure out the extent of Reaves? injuries.
While I?ve not been privy to these documents, the report by Operation Rescue indicates that a young woman contracted Planned Parenthood to perform a second trimester abortion and died later that day.
A few things stand out.
First, if true, a 5 1/2 hour delay for a woman hemorrhaging is beyond comprehension. When this woman was finally sent to the hospital, she was sent to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, which according to their website is a Level 1 Trauma Center.
That?s significant.

Level 1 trauma centers in big cities such as Chicago have for years been saving the lives of people pulled from horrific car wrecks and shootings by assault weapons which devastate the internal organs. Yet this hospital, the only hospital in Illinois named to the U.S. News and World Report National Honor Roll, with its Level 1 trauma center could not save this young woman from Planned Parenthood.

According to Dr. James C. Anderson, M.D., in his 30 years of experience as an emergency room physician, abortion clinics never informed him about their patients? conditions.
?I have always had to evaluate the situation, come to my own conclusions, and initiate what I thought was appropriate treatment. This definitely created some time delays that were not in the patient?s best interest,? stated Dr. Anderson. ?These delays can have life-threatening implications when dealing with hemorrhage or infection.?
In Tonya?s case, that delay proved fatal.
At 5:30 p.m., doctors performed an ultrasound, which revealed the abortion was incomplete, something solely the responsibility of the Planned Parenthood abortionist.
Reaves was then given a second D&E abortion procedure, but that apparently did not solve the problems and pain Reaves was experiencing.
A second ultrasound revealed a perforation in Reaves? uterus.
Reaves was returned to the operating room at 10:12 p.m. for additional surgery, where ?an uncontrollable bleed was discovered.? At 11:20 p.m., Reaves was pronounced dead.

The story as recounted in LifeSite is nauseating. That a Level 1 trauma center in Chicago was powerless to save this young woman is chilling.
It?s understandable that women die in well-equipped hospitals during routine childbirth. Gynecologic traumas do suddenly arise, but when they do, they arise in well-equipped hospitals and not clinics that attempt to treat those traumas for 5 1/2 hours.
In the cold and brutal calculus of war, generals know well that they need to sacrifice a part of their forces in order to gain ultimate victory in the field. It?s no different in the cold and brutal calculus of the abortion war. That?s why we never hear much about the Tonya Reaves?s whose deaths, if they even get mentioned on the evening news are never pursued and quickly forgotten.
It?s just that way in war.
But Tonya Reaves was somebody?s daughter, niece, friend. She was a young woman with her whole life ahead of her, and one of those young women of color whom Planned Parenthood targets with over 75% of their outreach. Perhaps we?ll never know what drove this young mother to seek the death of her well-developed baby, or whether she knew just how well developed her baby truly was.
What is known is this: By the time Planned Parenthood was finished with her not even the best trauma center in town could save her. It may well be infrequent, but that?s cold comfort to Tonya?s family.

Syrian defector wants to help unify opposition
BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's most prominent defector offered himself up Thursday as a figure to unite the fractious opposition, saying he failed to persuade his former friend, President Bashar Assad, to end a bloody crackdown that has killed thousands of Syrians.
The remarks by Manaf Tlass, a Syrian brigadier general until he abandoned the regime this month, were published in a Saudi newspaper just as opposition factions gathered in Qatar to try to agree on a transitional leadership if Assad's regime falls.
Some opposition members are deeply skeptical of Tlass, believing he's far too close to the regime.
Mahmoud Othman, a member of the opposition Syrian National Council, said Tlass would simply "bring back the regime with a different image."
"Those who recently defected from the regime must not take part in leading the transitional period," Othman told The Associated Press from Istanbul, where he is based. "After the transitional period, the Syrian people will choose whomever they want through the ballots."
Members of the SNC met Thursday, but made no decisions on a possible leadership to fill the vacuum if Assad falls, according to Burhan Ghalioun, a former leader of the group.
The SNC has acted as the international face of the revolution, but it has been unable to unite all dozens of disparate rebel and opposition factions under one banner.
Ghalioun said talks would continue Friday and could stretch on past this series of meetings.
Tlass, a commander in the powerful Republican Guard and the son of a former defense minister, defected three weeks ago. Although the regime has remained largely intact over the course of the 17-month-old uprising, the pace of defections appears to be picking up.
"I will try to help as much as I can to unite all the honorable people inside and outside Syria to put together a roadmap to get us out of this crisis, whether there is a role for me or not," he told the Al-Sharq Al-Awsat daily in an interview.
He said he was in Saudi Arabia ? a key financial backer of the rebellion ? to assess what kind of assistance the oil-rich nation could give to help create a new Syria. He said he does not see a future for Syria with Assad at the helm. The last time he saw the president, he said, was about a year ago.
Turkey's Foreign Ministry also announced a surprise visit by Tlass on Thursday. He attended a dinner with Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, who has been an outspoken Assad critic. Turkey's intelligence chief and a senior foreign ministry official also were at the dinner.
Tlass left Davutoglu's residence after about an hour, wearing a dark suit with a light blue shirt, the top buttons undone. He didn't take any questions and was driven away in the back of a BMW.
Since his defection, Tlass has spoken publicly only twice, both times to Saudi-controlled media.
Tlass, once a personal friend of Assad, told the newspaper that the regime has many good people without blood on their hands and that the country's institutions should be preserved. He said he tried to persuade the president not to listen to his inner circle of security advisers who were all recommending a harsh crackdown on the uprising.
Tlass said he defected when he realized the regime could not be deterred from its single-minded pursuit of crushing the opposition.
"Sometimes in a friendship you advise a friend many times, and then you discover that you aren't having any impact, so you decide to distance yourself," he said.
A handsome man in his mid-40s, Manaf led an extravagant lifestyle, and he and his wife were fixtures on the social scene in Syria, where he often spoke on Assad's behalf.
Tlass was also a powerful Sunni in a government dominated by the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. His father, Mustafa Tlass, was the most trusted lieutenant of the late Hafez Assad, the president's father and predecessor.
The conflict in Syria, which activists say has killed more than 19,000 people since March 2011, has drawn deep international condemnation. But world powers have few options to help beyond diplomacy ? in part because of fears that any military intervention could exacerbate an already explosive battle. Syria's close ties to Iran and the Islamic militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon mean that the conflict has the potential to draw in the country's neighbors.
In Washington, the Obama administration is weighing its options for more direct involvement in the Syrian civil war if the rebels opposing the Assad regime can wrest enough control to create a safe haven for themselves, U.S. officials said.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says it's only a matter of time before the rebels have enough territory and organization to create such areas.
"More and more territory is being taken," Clinton said this week. "It will eventually result in a safe haven inside Syria, which will then provide a base for further actions by the opposition."
Still, U.S. officials are insisting they won't provide arms to Syria's anti-Assad forces or push for a no-fly zone over rebel-controlled areas.
For more than a week, Assad's regime has suffered a string of blows, although his forces are regaining their momentum. After a rebel rush on the capital ? including a brazen bombing that killed four top regime insiders ? the government routed the fighters by calling in attack helicopters and heavy weapons that devastated entire neighborhoods.
Rebels have been fighting for six days in the commercial capital Aleppo, and on Thursday they braced for a government onslaught amid reports that the regime is massing reinforcements to retake the embattled city of 3 million. They reported more intense firepower being used against them, including artillery strikes.
"Regime forces have been randomly shelling neighborhoods, and the civilians are terrified," local activist Mohammed Saeed told the AP via Skype.
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Washington has "grave concerns" about tanks and fighter jets being used in a densely populated city.
"The concern is that we will see a massacre in Aleppo, and that's what the regime appears to be lining up for," she said.
The clashes have spread to neighborhoods close to the center of the city, which has a medieval center that is a UNESCO world heritage site.
According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, some 130 people have been killed in Aleppo since the clashes there began last Saturday.
As the violence continues, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he fears for Syria's future. On Thursday, he paid his respects to the 8,000 victims of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre ? and said he does not want his successor to have to do the same 20 years from now in Syria.
"The international community must be united not to see any further bloodshed in Syria because I do not want to see any of my successors, after 20 years, visiting Syria, apologizing for what we could have done now to protect the civilians in Syria ? which we are not doing now," he said during a visit to a memorial-cemetery complex near Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

This was the quote of the day from Catholic Digest Daily Moments. ?In fact, it was sent to me twice.....I figured that was a sign that I was supposed to really think about it instead of my normal skim and delete.
I'm glad the value of my life isn't dependent on the "place I occupy." ?I will never live in an incredible house or have an amazing summer home. ?But, I have a home that (mostly) fits my family and we do our best with the time we have to take care of upkeep. ?Really, compared to the way much of the world lives, we have an incredible number of blessings! ?(Even with a dryer door that still needs duct tape to help hold it shut despite all of Jay's efforts to fix it!)
The real meat and potatoes of that quote is the second part...How do I "occupy that space?" ?I wish I could say our home was always a place of peace and respite. ?I wish I could say that our time in our home is always used to build each other up and encourage each other on the paths God has given each of us.
That wouldn't be the truth.
Too often, one or more persons in our family are too critical, too impatient, not loving, or struggling with something internally that makes them unsettled and they end up taking their feelings out on the people that love them the most.
Too often that person is me!
I am running on days of broken sleep, due to a baby and toddler that continually stir during the night and now, on top of that, because of fear. ?Turns out that our neighbor's house alarm went off at 4:30 am two days ago because someone actually got into their garage and tried to break into their house! ?We live in the suburbs in a fairly quiet town. ?That break in has definitely triggered a lot of insecurity and fear for me and is now adding to my sleeplessness....and I truly do not need anything else to help me not sleep(Kate and Luke do a great job on their own!)!

Fear is a tough issue for me. ?Now that I feel like I've worked through the issue of grief over our kids growing up...at least for the moment!(click?here?to view that post)...I think I have my work cut out for me with all my fear problems!To deal with the issue at hand, I'm just not sure how to regain a feeling of safety. ?We are making sure all the doors and windows are locked before we go to bed, but there are going to be nights when the windows will need to be open. ?I just don't know if I will ever feel safe enough to sleep soundly with windows open ever again.
I'm thinking we should get an alarm system...Jay's talking about a dog.(Umm...no...sorry, honey, been there. There was an opportunity here for Nolan to show us another way, to (again) stretch the boundaries of what is possible in a superhero film. Instead, alas, the latter half of The Dark Knight Rises retreats toward conventionality.

U.S. biofuel advocates urge Congress to continue Pentagon funding
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Military veterans and former lawmakers urged Congress on Tuesday to continue funding the Pentagon's controversial biofuels program, saying the failure to deal with U.S. dependence on foreign oil was a key factor in the wars of the past 22 years.
"As long as U.S. and global economic security are dependent on oil produced in volatile regions of the world, our military will be required to continue deployments and dangerous missions to ensure the ... security of vital energy resources," the group, led by retired Republican Senator John Warner, said in a letter to President Barack Obama and members of Congress.
The letter, published in advertisements in major newspapers on Tuesday, came as the struggle over the military's biofuel program heats up in Congress, with some lawmakers trying to block military spending on alternative fuels that are more costly than conventional petroleum.
Lawmakers have expressed anger over the high price the military has paid for alternative energy. The Navy spent about $12 million for last week's test of the Great Green Fleet, an aircraft carrier strike force run primarily on alternative fuels.
For the two-day demonstration, the military paid about $26 per gallon for the biofuel, which was then mixed half-and-half with petroleum. The final price per gallon of the 50-50 blend was about $15. The Air Force last month paid $59 per gallon for a smaller amount of alcohol-to-jet fuel needed for testing.
But military officials note that a $10 hike in the cost of a barrel of oil will increase the Defense Department's annual bill for fuel by about $1.3 billion.
Senator Jim Inhofe, a skeptic of the military's spending on alternative fuels, sent a letter to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus on Tuesday asking for details about the total cost of the Green Fleet demonstration, including the price of shipping the biofuels from Texas and Louisiana to Hawaii.
"Requiring the Navy to spend exorbitant amounts of an already stretched budget on alternative fuels is impacting our near and long-term readiness," said Inhofe, who described himself as a proponent of an "all-of-the-above strategy on energy development."
"It is our duty to efficiently and wisely use the limited resources at our disposal to provide for the defense of this great nation," he said.
CALL FOR FURTHER TESTING
Warner, a former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told reporters the military needed $11 million in the 2013 fiscal year beginning in October to complete testing of alternative fuels to certify that they can be used safely as replacements for petroleum.
Warner, an adviser for the Pew Project on National Security, Energy and Security, said the Navy's message was to "let us finish our R&D (research and development), where we're having to pay higher price." After that, the Navy would not purchase biofuels for operations unless they were competitively priced.
Retired Marine Corps Major General Anthony Jackson, who signed the letter to Obama and Congress, said petroleum might be cheaper than biofuels but did not include the high price the American people had paid in blood and treasure as a result of the wars of the past two decades.
"We have been since 1990 ... involved in armed conflict in the Middle East," he added. "The cost in our lack of response to the chokehold both on our national defense and our national economy of oil has been a great deal more expensive than we like to say."
Phyllis Cuttino, director of the Pew Clean Energy Program, said the Pentagon's energy innovation programs shouldn't be politicized because they are about saving taxpayers dollars over the long run.
She said some legislation in Congress aimed at blocking the Pentagon's energy programs needed to be reworked because the language would actually outlaw fuels currently in use, particularly in unmanned vehicles.
