Ex USF fraternity president sentenced to prison in child-sex case

A former university fraternity president was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison Wednesday for traveling to Maitland where he thought he was going to meet two girls for sex.

The FBI began investigating Dwipin Maliackal in December when he contacted an undercover agent on an "incest" chat room used by predators and pedophiles.

The agent was posing as the father of 10-year-old and 13-year-old girls.

Maliackal, 25, told the detective he was "into incest" and that he would "love" to make the 10-year-old his "girlfriend."

According to Maliackal's plea agreement, the former University of South Florida student said he wanted to get the 13-year-old pregnant.

Maliackal told the agent graphic things he wanted to do with the children and said he would travel to Orlando to meet them.

On Dec. 20, Maliackal drove from his home in the Tampa Bay area to a Maitland restaurant, where he arranged to meet the father and his two daughters.

After he was taken into custody, Maliackal admitted he planned to have sex with the supposed 13- and 10-year-old girls, the plea agreement said.

Agents also discovered Maliackal was a member of several online groups whose subject matter involves sex with children.

Maliackal pleaded guilty in April to one count of coercion or enticement of a minor. He faced a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison.

During a sentencing hearing Wednesday in Orlando federal court, defense attorney Don West told the court Maliackal has been undergoing therapy while jailed in Seminole County.

Maliackal is remorseful, motivated to improve his mental health and a good candidate for rehabilitation, West said.

But Senior U.S. District Judge John Antoon II noted the vulgar conversations Maliackal had with the undercover agent and said Maliackal's actions were not a "momentary impulse."
