SALT LAKE CITY ? Utah?s attorney general has filed a friend of the court brief with the U.S. Supreme Court, seeking to uphold California?s Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act, banning same-sex marriage.
?Traditional marriage is the bedrock foundation for families and society,? Utah Attorney General John Swallow said in a statement released Friday night. ?As part of my promise to protect Utah families, we will fight to make sure traditional marriage is protected and preserved.?
Utah is among 40 states that define marriage as between a man and a woman. The state also has a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. Nine states, plus the District of Columbia, allow same-sex marriages.
The Utah Pride Center recently announced it would file an amicus brief with the Utah Supreme Court seeking to overturn Prop. 8 and DOMA.
