Quick PR tip for Maine, NH businesses - Maine PR Blog - Maine PR ...

CLICK HERE: Unless you use direct language, people will think you're trying to bullshit them.In my daily activities as a public relations writer/producer, my 7 years of Latin and Ivy League English degree rarely matter. They are nowhere near as valuable as the nights I spent during my high school years working until 2AM in a hot dog trailer outside the gate of a textile mill in Biddeford, Maine.

EVERYBODY is hungry at 2AM, whether drunk or sober, whether occupying society?s lower stations or its highest rungs. Status is irrelevant, and ?get me my food fast? is the only concern. When liquored-up hooligans are rocking your trailer back and forth and hot oil from the fryolators is splashing about because they think you're not cooking fast enough, lots of syllables don't do you much good. Right to the point is much better. That?s where I got my real education --- how to talk to EVERYBODY.

Write like everybody talks. Every business owner should approach PR, marketing and advertising with this Golden Rule in mind. Further, remember to mentally re-visit this Golden Rule periodically, and remind yourself of its value. One of the greatest and most famous copywriters of all time, David Ogilvy, expressed the Golden Rule succinctly: ?Don?t be a pretentious ass.?

In the 1990?s when I was writing a lot of ad copy for a hospital, I would always use the word ?doctor? in my first drafts. That?s because when you tell somebody you?re sick, a common response is, ?Have you been to the doctor?? The question is almost never, ?Have you been to the physician??

The communications director at the hospital would always ?correct? my copy, and substitute the word ?physician? for my ?doctor.? The next time I wrote a first draft, I would stubbornly write ?doctor? once again and she would correct me all over again. Her unconscious priority was her personal interpretation of prestige and how to win it. Her priority wasn't giving customers information in terms they understand. Her loss. (And the hospital?s.)

Writing really is that simple, as long as you have command of the language. I try to re-visit that rule every day. It benefits my business, and I firmly believe it will benefit yours. ?Don?t be a pretentious ass.? CLICK THIS LINK for a HILARIOUS take on the same general topic.
