Analysis: Thrifty truckers wary of pricey natural gas vehicles

By Nichola Groom

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Truckers considering natural gas as an alternative to high-priced diesel say the cost of vehicles that run on the cheap and cleaner-burning fuel is still too high for them to see a timely payback on their investment.

A push to run more of the nation's truck fleet on cleaner, domestically produced natural gas is rapidly gaining momentum.

Suppliers like T. Boone Pickens' Clean Energy Fuels, Royal Dutch Shell and China's private ENN Group are scrambling to build natural gas fueling stations along U.S. highways, while Cummins-Westport Inc will begin later this year selling a 12-liter natural gas engine able to power the biggest trucks on the road.

Truck companies too, are enthusiastic - up to a point.

The trucks that will sport the new engine, made by a joint venture of Cummins Inc and Westport Innovations Inc, will have expensive tanks for storing compressed or liquefied natural gas. With the industry still reeling from an economic slump that pushed margins below 5 percent, truckers have little ability to make big bets on new equipment.

Customers like household products giant Procter & Gamble and building materials maker Owens Corning, however, are increasingly demanding that their products be hauled on cleaner trucks using cheaper fuel.

Natural gas trucks' greenhouse gas emissions are about 20 percent lower than those of diesel trucks. But truck companies must fork over an extra $40,000 to $80,000 per natural gas truck - a big markup considering a heavy-duty diesel truck starts at about $100,000.

President Barack Obama wants to begin a federal incentive program that would help pay for the new trucks, but budget woes make that unlikely.

Big natural gas-producing states such as Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Texas, as well as environmentally conscious California, offer programs to get heavy-duty, natural gas trucks up and rolling. But none foots the bill entirely, and in an era of fiscal tightening, truckers fear the subsidies may not last.

Replacing diesel with natural gas can save truckers about $1.50 per gallon, and experts say a truck that runs at least 80,000 miles a year could see a payback in two years. But factor in the cost of modifying maintenance facilities and the still unknown value for second-hand natural gas trucks and the math isn't so clear cut.

"We can't make the economics work," said Randy Mullett, a vice president at Con-way Inc, one of the country's largest trucking companies. "The upfront cost is too high."

Con-way is testing two compressed natural gas trucks in the Chicago area and plans to add three or four liquefied natural gas (LNG) trucks in Texas, where state incentives will help offset the added costs. But Mullett said fueling big rigs with natural gas is "not the slam dunk that it's presented to be."

MOVING BEYOND TRASH

Heavy-duty trucks are big fuel consumers, running more than 130 billion miles a year in the United States and averaging about 6.5 miles per gallon, according to the American Trucking Associations. With about 200,000 such trucks sold each year, and turnover of fleet vehicles about every five years, the opportunity to reduce diesel fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions by switching to natural gas is huge.

New techniques unlocking vast reserves of natural gas from shale have produced a boom in U.S. supplies and driven prices down sharply, increasing the transportation industry's interest in using natural gas as its primary fuel.

Earlier this month, BNSF Railway Co said it would run some locomotives on liquefied natural gas to save fuel costs, and Lockheed Martin said it was developing new fuel tanks for ships, trains and trucks powered with LNG.

Heavy-duty truck maker Kenworth, a unit of Paccar Inc, has a "very large backlog" of orders for natural gas vehicles, according to national sales manager Andy Douglas. Cummins-Westport, meanwhile, has been growing about 30 percent a year, and the addition of the 12-liter engine should give it "a pretty good growth spurt for the next few years," said Jim Arthurs, the joint venture's president.

The waste industry has already made a big push into natural gas, with about half of the garbage trucks sold in the United States last year running on it. Natural gas works well for garbage trucks because they are able to refuel overnight at dedicated stations at their home bases. Trucking companies say they could lose precious time and fuel going out of their way to find a natural gas fueling station near their routes.

Clean Energy, ENN and Shell have committed to building a network of natural gas stations along U.S. highways, but they need to know that there will be a sufficient number of trucks using those stations to justify their investment.

Waste Management Inc began converting its fleet to compressed natural gas (CNG) about three years ago. It is adding 700 to 1,000 natural gas trucks each year, saving roughly $30,000 a year per truck on fuel and maintenance, according to spokeswoman Jennifer Andrews.

The company has "not seen the costs of natural gas trucks come down at all," Andrews said, but added that it had received significant revenue from government grant programs.

STATE INCENTIVES HELP

Some trucking companies said incentives are the only way they can add natural gas trucks to their fleet.

C.R. England, a family-owned truck company based in Salt Lake City, Utah, has been running five LNG trucks between Ontario, California and Las Vegas since late 2011 but has yet to make back the close to $80,000 premium it spent per vehicle.

The company is hoping it will win a grant from Pennsylvania to help it add five CNG trucks to serve Hershey Co. The state is awarding grants of up to $25,000 per vehicle to cover up to half of the added cost of a natural gas truck.

C.R. England would probably not seek to buy any more natural gas trucks without such an incentive, said Allen Nielsen, director of fuel for the company.

Even United Parcel Service Inc, which has 93 LNG-fueled big rigs, said it has taken advantage of state incentives to buy most of them. Though the lack of a fueling infrastructure is a key impediment to adoption of natural gas trucks, the director of UPS' global energy group, Mike Whitlatch, said "the cost of the vehicle is probably the largest challenge."

CUSTOMERS PUSHING HARD

Truckers can't rely on their customers for help, either.

"We're trying to push pretty hard," said Sean Turner, purchasing group manager at Procter & Gamble Co, which is running 22 CNG trucks at a Pennsylvania factory that makes Pampers diapers and Bounty paper towels. The company's truck partner, which it would not name, made the investment, Turner said.

Owens-Corning is talking to nearly all its trucking partners about switching to natural gas, according to Dave Uncapher, sourcing and operations leader for the Toledo, Ohio company. Some who balked at the proposal have lost "a piece" of the building material maker's business, he said.

Not only do customers want to see more predictable, and hopefully lower, fuel costs, many also have internal goals to reduce the carbon and tailpipe emissions of their supply chains.

Dillon Transport Inc, a privately held company based in Burr Ridge, Illinois, agreed to Owens Corning's request, adding 25 LNG trucks in Texas about a year ago.

To help offset the additional costs, Dillon is aiming to run its natural gas trucks 300,000 miles a year. The average for big trucks is about 68,000 miles a year, according to federal data. But the company's marketing director, Phil Crofts, said the question of recovering the extra cost of a natural gas truck is murky, because there is no market for used LNG trucks and the conversion of maintenance facilities adds to the costs.

The natural gas trucks are more about distinguishing itself in the market, Crofts said. The deal with Owens Corning has helped Dillon land a contract with fertilizer producer Mosaic Co to run 50 CNG trucks at the Port of Tampa. That, plus the Owens Corning business, has helped boost volumes 35 percent.

"This business is not like the cell phone business or the iPad business where there are great new markets going out there," Crofts said. "For us to grow we've got to be taking somebody else's business."

Gift Tax (Property Transfer) - English Forum Switzerland

If an overseas property is owned by Swiss tax residents, and that property is transferred between spouses - is there any tax liability here in Switzerland for that transfer?

(I checked in the other country, and there usually would be - but as we are not tax resident there, they say it is only due back in home country. But as spouses here are considered a single tax entity, maybe there is no tax due at all?)

The importance of a comparative market analysis in selling your home

?

Selling your home these days isn?t as simple as it used to be. With the explosion of real estate marketing on the Internet, prospective buyers can do their initial home shopping online. While this means that your listed property will be viewed by more prospective customers, it also means that many other properties will also be showcased, making for a much more competitive market. While sales in the existing home market went up nine percent in January 2013, the market has not fully recovered from the 2008 housing crash. This means that mortgage credit is still tight, which may prevent some prospective buyers from qualifying for a home loan. In such a competitive market, establishing a realistic selling price for your home is a critical component of a successful sale.
One of the best tools for determining the actual sale value of your home is to use a comparative market analysis. This document is the too l that real estate professionals use to help you to determine the value of your home, based primarily on recent sales of similar homes. Because every home is to some extent unique, a thorough and timely comparison of your home to others currently on the market is one of the best assets you can use to help you price your home for sale.

There is no standard format for a comparative market analysis, and the length and complexity will vary with the size of the market. In a small community with limited home sales, prices may be very subjective. In larger towns and cities, the large number of houses for sale allows for a more objective pricing based upon a number of homes, which have many features in common. Almost every comparative market analysis will present information from properties listed in five separate categories reflecting the status of all listings in the past 6 months. A six-month period has been found to be a long enough period to allow for both a representative sampling of prices and a partial barometer of pricing trends. Of the five categories listed below, only the Sold Listings give you highly reliable pricing information. Listings are categorized as follows:
? Active Listings. These include the homes in your area currently listed for sale and the prices asked by the sellers or listing agents. These prices only let you know what your fellow sellers are ?asking??not what they are actually getting. It may help in setting a price.

? Pending Sales. Do not confuse these houses with those that have been sold. Deals can go sour for a variety of reasons and the house may come back on the market.

? Sold Listings. These sales figures will reflect the price actually paid for the homes.

? Off the Market. These are the houses that were listed, but the listings were subsequently withdrawn or cancelled.

? Expired Listings. These are homes that did not sell, and the owner or listing agent allowed the listing to expire.
It is at this point in the report that the subjective part of the analysis really begins. Information on recent home sales is culled from listings of houses roughly comparable to yours. The greater the similarity between your house and the recently sold houses, the better you will be able to determine a saleable, but fair price. Listed below are several important factors, which have consistently influenced home sale prices:
? Location. You don?t have to be a realtor to have heard of the realtor?s mantra, ?Location, location, location.? Simply stated a bad location drives the value of a property down while a good location drives it up. No matter how nice the house, if it is in a rundown neighborhood or noisy location, its value will be well below similar houses in a quiet, well-maintained neighborhood. A house with an ocean view, will sell for much more than one without such a view. For parents with school age children, which school district the home is in may be the deciding factor. Location matters!

? Square footage. It is the most basic standard of measure amongst comparables. All things being equal, people with families will usually opt for the larger house.

? Condition. Unless your price is well below the market, nobody wants to buy a fixer-upper. Smart consumers just don?t buy houses that need a lot of repairs. You buy the house with the new roof, not the one that needs one. Similarly, interior upgrades reflect pride of ownership.

? Amenities. Does the house have one bathroom, or two? Did you want that pool, or would you have preferred a yard?

? Community & School. ?What school a home is assigned too, proximity to shopping, libraries, and amenities also play a huge factor. You can search and explore those factors here using our community tool.
A comparative market analysis is the most thorough assessment tool you can use to price your house. It also goes without saying; you will also want one when you buy your next home. By clicking on this link: Free Home Value Analysis you can receive a detailed report that will show:

Cypriot officials: Plan B drawn up to get bailout

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) ? Searching for a way out of a crippling financial crisis, officials in Cyprus on Wednesday pursued a new bailout strategy that could include a loan from Russia in exchange for natural gas leases and selling off assets from its most troubled banks.

Cyprus needs to come up with 5.8 billion euros ( $7.5 billion) on its own in order to secure 10 billion euros in rescue loans from international creditors. But the country's first plan to seize up to 10 percent of people's bank accounts failed miserably. Now officials are trying to limit the amount of money they need to take from customer's deposits.

The new "Plan B" could be voted on as early as Thursday, three top government officials said.

The latest move came a day after lawmakers voted overwhelmingly against the earlier plan ? a rejection that threw Cyprus' entire bailout into question. That raised the possibility the country's banks could collapse, the government would be unable to pay its bills and Cyprus could be forced out of the euro.

That could roil global financial markets as well as endanger deposits in the country even further.

The new "Plan B" was described by three top government officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the proposal were not being released until party officials had a chance to review them at a meeting Thursday morning.

The package includes a proposal to restructure Cyprus' heavily indebted second-largest lender, Laiki. The idea would be to isolate the bank's bad assets, which would be taken over by the government, from its good assets, which could be sold off to raise money. That strategy could also be applied to the country's biggest lender, Bank of Cyprus.

To avoid bank runs and give officials time to push the package through, the country's banks, which have been shuttered since Saturday, will remain closed for the rest of the week, said the central bank spokeswoman, Aliki Stylianou. Monday is a bank holiday, so banks will not reopen before Tuesday.

Cyprus has turned to long-time ally Russia for help, and Finance Minister Michalis Sarris was in Moscow on Wednesday to discuss a range of aid options and vowed to remain there until he secured a pledge of support. "We will be here until some kind of agreement is reached," Sarris said.

Nearly a third of the total amount of deposits in Cyprus' banks is believed to be held by Russians. The idea that authorities could dip directly into people's bank accounts had outraged Cypriots and Russians alike.

A Cypriot government official said the new proposal still includes some tax on deposits, but at a percentage far lower than those originally proposed. The official said the EU had given Cyprus until Monday to come up with an alternative, so speed was of the essence.

The European Union and Germany in particular, have long argued that they should not have to ask their own taxpayers to contribute to bailing out a country when it was Russian oligarchs who would benefit.

While the economy of Cyprus is tiny ? a mere 0.2 percent of the eurozone ? its exit from the shared currency could raise speculation that other, larger countries could leave, roiling global financial markets.

Cypriot political leaders held emergency meetings throughout the day Wednesday to try to find an alternative plan and seemed inclined to rely on Russia to help them out.

Russia is a longtime ally and also has skin in the game ? Russians own about a third of the 68 billion euros in deposits with Cypriot banks. It was unclear however, how much it would help and the Russians appeared to be balking at pouring any more money into the country.

Russia could extend a 2.5 billion euro loan that it gave Cyprus in 2011 and lower repayment rates. It could also provide a fresh loan, have one of its banks take over one of Cyprus' ailing lenders, or demand an interest in natural gas fields that Cyprus has discovered in the Mediterranean.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev criticized the eurozone and Cypriot officials for their plan to seize deposits, comparing them to Soviet-style autocrats.

"So far, the actions of the European Union, the European Commission and the government of Cyprus have resembled that of an elephant in a china shop," Medvedev said in remarks carried Wednesday by the Interfax news agency.

Scrambling to avert a financial meltdown, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades held talks Wednesday with European and IMF officials. The eurozone and IMF must sign off on any Plan B the Cypriots come up with if it is to be approved as part of the bailout.

Some sort of deal must be approved within days because Cyprus is running on borrowed time ? literally.

The European Central Bank is keeping the Cypriot banks alive by allowing them to draw on emergency support from the local central bank. But the ECB has said it would cut off that aid if there was no bailout deal soon and it became clear the banks had no hope of becoming solvent again.

In Nicosia, residents waited anxiously to see what lay in store for them.

Avetis Bahcecian has been running his Armenian restaurant in Nicosia for years. Now, with the uncertainty swirling around Cyprus, he's worried about his business.

"Whatever they do, they have to do it quickly because this uncertainty is hurting business," the 41-year-old said as he kneaded dough to make lahmacun, a traditional Armenian pizza-style food. "Our business is down by 40 percent in the last couple days."

ATMs have been dispensing cash and debit and credit cards have been working, so Cypriots have not faced any immediate cash shortage for day-to-day living.

Tensions remained high as Cypriots wondered whether the country's final rescue deal would include the hated bank deposit seizures.

Under the initial bailout plan conceived in Brussels last weekend, Cyprus was to have funded its part of the bailout by seizing 6.75 percent of all deposits up to 100,000 euros and 9.9 percent of those above that threshold. That caused outrage, leading the government to propose an amended version that would have spared deposits up to 20,000 euros. That plan was rejected by lawmakers on Tuesday.

As uncertainty grew over the country's future, even the country's influential Orthodox church offered to help.

Its head, Archbishop Chrysostomos II, said the church was willing to mortgage its assets to invest in government bonds. The church has considerable wealth, including property, stakes in a bank and a brewery.

"The wealth of the church is at the disposal of the country," Chrysostomos said.

Barclays Introduces 'PINsentry' ? Pioneering New Security for Online ...

(PRWEB) June 9, 2007

Barclays Bank has announced that later this year, Barclays customers who use their online bank account to set up payments to new third party accounts will begin using PINsentry devices. The devices will be used together with the customer?s normal debit card and PIN, to authenticate their identity at log in and for making certain payments. This will replace the need for passcodes and memorable words.

This is the latest in a series of Barclays (http://www.barclays.co.uk/ ) initiatives to increase the security protection for online banking customers ? last year it offered free anti-virus software as well as a SMS text message confirmation service to online customers. As a result Barclays online banking (http://www.barclays.co.uk/ ) won Anti-Fraud Strategy of the Year at the prestigious 2007 Financial Sector Technology Awards.

Over half a million customers will be automatically sent free PINsentry card readers and instructions by the end of the year, with this number increasing further as more customers are added to the service. The remaining customers will not need PINsentry at this stage ? it will only be needed by those who use online banking to set up payments out of their account to a new third party for the first time. Customers who simply wish to use online banking to view their accounts and pay bills to established payees will be able to continue to use online banking as normal without the need for PINsentry.

Barnaby Davis, Director for Electronic Banking, said: ?Barclays is constantly working to help protect customers and their money and that is why we have invested in this system. PINsentry is the next generation of fraud prevention technology and Barclays is proud to be the first organisation in the UK to roll it out to its customers.?

He concluded, ?The popularity of Barclays online (http://www.barclays.co.uk/ ) banking service comes down to convenience and security and the introduction of PINsentry will enhance both of these features.?

Barclays is sending out handheld chip and PIN card readers to online banking customers in a pioneering anti-fraud initiative.

Don't hate! Nicki Minaj is awesome on 'American Idol'

By Craig Berman, TODAY contributor

Michael Becker / Fox

New "Idol" judge Nicki Minaj is adding some much needed spice to the singing competition.

Opinion: When "American Idol" judge Nicki Minaj is unhappy, ?she's not afraid to show it. Just last week, after it was revealed that?contestant Curtis Finch Jr. was in danger of being sent packing,?she threatened, "If you go home, I?m going home." And when the hopeful got the boot, Nicki left the stage.

Her exit was great news for the vocal portion of the Internet who would've been thrilled had she carried out her plan and stayed away for good.

But she didn?t, and thank the reality TV gods for that. Though the Nicki haters may be muting their sets whenever she opens her mouth, she?s the best thing to happen to ?Idol? in ages.

The "Starships" singer is clearly polarizing. She says wacky things. She shows up late sometimes and -- as viewers saw last week -- departs early when it suits her. There are some nights when she seems to be paying limited attention.

And who among us can turn away from that action?

Judge drama essential
As judge Randy Jackson reminds us every time he can?t think of anything else to say, "American Idol" is a singing competition. It?s a high-end talent show, the likes of which go on in every small town in the world and are available 24 hours a day to anyone with a basic cable TV package. Particularly given the increasing competition in the marketplace, ?Idol? needs more than its brand name and Ryan Seacrest?s smiling face to avoid being tossed off its perch and lumped in with every other network?s copycat effort.

?Idol? found its secret right away: drama from the judges. Simon Cowell was the original bad boy who people thought they hated but secretly loved. For all the faux outrage over all the barbs he's thrown to guileless teenagers with outsized dreams, he guaranteed that every week, ?Idol? would have something worth watching other than forgettable vocalists singing disco tunes.

{{percent}}%

({{numVotes}} votes)

{{/data.answerData}}

Ever since he decided to leave the show for ?X Factor? (and how?s that working out for him?), "Idol" has drifted into dullness and safety, relying heavily on the idea that viewers in the habit of DVRing the show will keep watching on autopilot.

Replacing Simon and the rest of the crew (aside from Randy, who?s apparently indestructible) with Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler was a great way to add buzz, and there was always the chance that Steven would do something wacky like hit on a teenage female contestant or show up in drag. But most weeks, viewers saw average contestants given below-average and unmemorable feedback from the judges, and sitting through the commercial-padded episodes got harder and harder.

Newbies to the rescue
The show needed a reboot, and it?s gotten one. Keith Urban has been outstanding in his opening season, offering encouragement, advice and gentle but firm criticism as warranted. Mariah Carey provides the tight outfits and forgettable prose. Randy is also back to remind people that this is technically the same show that saw Kelly Clarkson burst from obscurity to stardom in its first season.

But Nicki is the key. She?s the one person on the show who?s impossible to ignore because she?s impossible to predict. You literally have no idea what you're getting when you turn on the TV every Wednesday and Thursday. She might use an upper-crust British accent in the night?s commentary, or she might cause the Fox censor to work overtime. She might undress all the men with both her eyes and her feedback, or tell her favorite woman that she reminds her of pancakes with syrup and butter. It?s like combining a talent show with performance art.

She?s the first judge since Simon whose comments are impossible to ignore, and she?s under no pressure to conform. She?s a top-selling artist who?s only going to gain credibility among her fans if she?s controversial. She has a lot of rope, and she knows it.

What?s with the kindness?
Surprisingly, where she?s not like Simon is in her evilness.

Simon was, let?s face it, a jerk. Many thought that given her status and reputation in hip-hop, Nicki would have more to gain by being cutting than being nice. She fed into that soon after taking the job, noting that she didn?t plan to advance people just because of their touching backstories.

She hasn?t done that. If Nicki doesn?t like something, she?ll say so, but there?s no likening a bad performance to a lounge act on a sinking cruise ship, or whatever simile Simon is beating into the ground these days. She?ll offer useful ideas when she has them, and she?ll passionately urge those she doesn?t like to mend their evil ways.

Put bluntly, Nicki makes "Idol" worth watching again.
