WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Apple Inc may continue to import and sell certain older iPads and iPhones made to use on AT&T's network, U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman said on Saturday in overturning a ban issued by a trade panel. Froman overturned a June decision by the International Trade Commission, which ruled that some Apple products infringed a patent owned by Samsung Electronics and ordered Apple to stop selling the popular devices. "This decision is based on my review of the various policy considerations ? as they relate to the effect on competitive conditions in the U.S. ?

Winnie Berry Humane Society offering $5 spay/neuters with PetSma ...

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

The Winnie Berry Humane Society is hoping to make a significant impact on the number of unwanted pets and lower the euthanasia numbers in Angelina county by offering $5 sterilizations thanks to a new grant.

For the first time ever in Angelina County, a sizeable grant from PetSmart Charities will shine a light on what the animal welfare community is doing to curb the growing unwanted pet population.

Winnie Berry Humane Society, Board of Directors Member, Reece Hubbard says, "We've gotten a grant from PetSmart Charities and it's basically to lower the unwanted pet population in parts of Angelina county and in Lufkin."

The grant allows for Winnie Berry Humane Society to offer $5 sterilizations to nearly 1,000 pets in the 75904 zip code in Lufkin.

"It gives us the opportunity to give a discounted spay/neuter program to the people in zip code 75904," said Hubbard. "In doing this, it actually lowers the euthanization numbers for the county."

The concept is fairly simple, the grant provides funds to sterilize 960 dogs and cats in geo-specific area.

"Every single animal that isn't spayed or neutered in that area to get them all done within a year," said Executive Director of Winnie Berry Humane Society, Paula Divello. "What that does is it wipes out the chance of unwanted pets being born in that area in a very short period of time so it has a direct effect on euthanasia numbers."

And judging by the number of people inundating the humane society to sign up for the $5 spay-neuter program, there is a lot of work to do. ?

But Director of Kurth Memorial Animal Shelter, Aaron Ramsey, says there's more to it.

"The critical piece to controlling the animal population is educating the public on the importance of spaying/neutering their animals so it's a team effort and all of us working together will definitely make a difference," said Ramsey.

Of course, the ultimate goal for any animal welfare caretakers is to reduce the pet euthanasia numbers, if not eliminate them all together.

"The end goal of any city who continuously tries things like trap-neuter-release, low-income or low-cost geo-targeted spays and neuters is to eventually become no-kill,"said Divello.

So what about if you don't live in zip code 75904, there are other low-cost programs available in the area.

The humane society also receives an annual grant from the T.L.L. Temple Foundation to fund the low-income program.

"The low-income program that we receive from the T.L.L. Temple Foundation is designed for those people who cannot afford to have a surgery and it covers Angelina county and the surrounding areas," said Divello. "If anybody makes $30,000 or less per year, it's $35-$55 for the surgery and we can also include the rabies shot."

This annual grant allows for about 760 low-cost spay neuters.

You can get more information about the $5 sterilizations and low-income spay-neuter program by calling the humane society at: 936-639-1880 or stop by the shelter located at: 1102 N. John Redditt Drive, Lufkin, TX, 75904 during business hours.

Virginia Private College Week to boost campus visits

Salem - Summer is the time for high school juniors and seniors to visit colleges and universities to explore which school is the best fit for them.

Students are invited to participate in Virginia Private College Week, hosted by the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia, from July 29-Aug. 3.

The week is designed to encourage students to visit as many of the 25 colleges that are members of this council as possible, including Roanoke College.

"Families usually tend to set aside this week for college visits," said Pat LeDonne, who is director of admissions at Roanoke. "They can usually hit about 11 schools in the given time frame."

Advertising for Private College Week has proven to be effective for Roanoke in the past. Last year, more than 125 families visited Roanoke for tours and information sessions.

If students visit at least three campuses that are members of the council during Private College Week, they will receive three application fee waivers to the schools of their choice. Should students chose to apply to Roanoke, they will save $30.

At Roanoke, tours of the campus will be held July 29 through Aug. 3. There will be two tours and information sessions daily, with the first beginning at 9 a.m. and the second at 2 p.m. On Aug. 3, only a 9 a.m. session will be offered.

Students may register for tour sessions by clicking this link.

"This week is always successful for us here at Roanoke," LeDonne said. "We're always busy with visits, but Private College Week really helps us to show the school to potential students."

Roanoke College, a classic liberal arts college in Salem, Virginia, combines firsthand learning with valuable personal connections in a beautiful, undergraduate setting. Roanoke is one of just seven percent of colleges nationwide with a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society. The Princeton Review lists Roanoke as the 18th most beautiful campus in its "Best 376 Colleges" 2012 guidebook.

CBS blocks Time Warner Cable customers online

Time Warner Cable customers in several major U.S. cities, including New York, Los Angeles and Dallas, have been without CBS programming since Friday, when negotiations over retransmission fees broke down. And now, thanks to a decision by CBS, those viewers andcustomers will feel squeezed out online: The network has decided to block them from accessing programming that would normally be available on the Internet, as well.

"If Time Warner Cable is a customer's Internet service provider, then their access to CBS full episode content via online and mobile platforms has been suspended as a result of Time Warner Cable's decision to drop CBS and Showtime from their market," CBS spokesperson Dana McClintock told TODAY.com.?

"As soon as CBS is restored on Time Warner Cable systems in affected markets, that content will be accessible again," she added.

That said, some TWC customers are still able to access CBS.com programming -- at least for now. As the spokesperson noted, "There are some instances where TWC customers have reported being able to watch. It's not 100%."

Time Warner Cable blacks out CBS stations

CBS

After fee negotiations failed between Time Warner Cable and CBS, the cable provider on Friday blacked out the network for customers in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Boston, Detroit, Chicago, Denver and Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. ET.

"We agreed to an extension on Tuesday morning with the expectation that we would engage in a meaningful negotiation with CBS. Since then, CBS has refused to have a productive discussion," the company said in a statement. "It's become clear that no matter how much time we give them, they're not willing to come to reasonable terms. We thank our customers for their patience and support as we continue to fight hard to keep their prices down."

CBS claims in its own statement that Time Warner Cable "has conducted negotiations in a combative and non-productive spirit, indulging in pointless brinksmanship and distorted public positioning ? such as the fictional and ridiculous 600 percent increase CBS supposedly demanded ? while maintaining antiquated positions no longer held by any other programming distributor in the business."

The network insists it wants only "fair compensation for the most-watched television network with the most popular content in the world."?

"Big Brother" and "Under the Dome" are two of the network's big summer hits that TWC subscribers in the affected cities will not be able to to watch during the blackout. The network is also home to megahits "The Big Bang Theory," "NCIS," "Two and a Half Men" and more.?

Because of the TWC blackout, CBS said that the cable provider's subscribers will miss the World Golf Championships featuring Tiger Woods on Aug. 3, and the PGA Championship, which kicks off Aug. 8.

Subscribers in New York, Los Angeles and Dallas will also be missing various baseball and football events in August.

Showtime, which is also owned by CBS, is blacked out as well.

The premium cable network said in a statement that Time Warner Cable's move was "completely unnecessary" and "totally punitive to our subscribers." Showtime also noted that it had agreed to allow the cable provider to continue carrying the premium network while negotiations were ongoing, and is "deeply disappointed" by the decision.

On Demand content from CBS, The Movie Channel, Flix and Smithsonian Channel will also be unavailable during the blackout. TWC said on its website that "as a courtesy," it is providing Showtime subscribers with Starz temporarily, and The Movie Channel subscribers with Encore.

TWC subscribers in the affected areas who have TV antennae and digital tuners should be able to get the CBS signal from their local stations.

CBS said in its statement that it hopes the blackout will be short-lived, but it is unclear how long it will last.

House of Cards Chris Culliver Atlanta school shooting Superbowl Kickoff Time 2013 30 rock What Time Is The Super Bowl 2013 Super Bowl 2013 Time

New Cards coach Arians wants Peterson on offense

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) ? Patrick Peterson is catching passes, throwing some and running with the ball during training camp.

No doubt about it, new Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians has plans for the dynamic player on offense.

In his first two NFL seasons, Peterson made the Pro Bowl as a punt returner, then as a cornerback. He remains a shutdown cornerback, first and foremost. And he still plans to return punts.

But Arians says Peterson is too talented to be standing on the sideline all the time when the Cardinals have the ball.

Peterson is all for it.

"I'm pretty dynamic with the ball in my hands," he said. "I'm not saying the offense needs help. They have great talent over there. But I guess (Arians) just wanted more explosive plays from guys that could help."

Peterson is supremely confident, to say the least.

"I'm definitely an athlete that can pretty much play every skill position on the field," he said.

It's no idle boast.

"There's not much he can't do," quarterback Carson Palmer agreed.

Arians approached Peterson early about playing some on offense.

"He kind of put a bug in my ear when he did get hired," Peterson said. "I didn't know he was going to take it this far. He has a pretty big package for me. But as a defensive player, I'm definitely honored to even be in consideration for taking some offensive snaps."

Peterson had a few snaps last season in the wildcat formation under then-coach Ken Whisenhunt. When Whisenhunt was fired and Arians came in, the new coach had an idea that he'd like some kind of package with Peterson on offense.

That idea has only grown as Arians watched Peterson up close.

"I had hopes that he could be something special in a package a week," Arians said. "But after you see the athlete he is, he probably could be one of the top five receivers in the league. So you say, 'Hmm, that's a lot of weapon sitting over here next to me.'"

Arians, speaking Saturday before the team's annual "Red-White" practice, said he's installed about 15 plays with Peterson on offense, although there wouldn't be that many in any single game plan.

"But there's no doubt we're going to utilize his skill set on offense," the coach said.

Arians doesn't use the wildcat. Instead, he has Peterson either at wide receiver or in the backfield. On several occasions, he's caught a pass over the middle.

"Now I get a chance to see what the receiver's point of view is in trying to attack defensive backs, and having that head start on defensive backs," Peterson said.

He has been a starting cornerback from the time the Cardinals selected him as the No. 5 pick overall out of LSU in 2011.

As a rookie, he tied an NFL record, becoming the fourth player in league history to return four punts for touchdowns in a single season. Of the four, Peterson is the only one to have all four returns go at least 80 yards. One was a 99-yard game-winner against St. Louis.

Last season, he didn't get a single punt return to the end zone, but he did excel at cornerback, ranking fourth in the league with seven interceptions. Peterson became the ninth player in NFL history to make two Pro Bowls before his 23rd birthday.

It is, Palmer said earlier in camp, too much talent to waste on one side of the ball.

"If he wasn't playing corner, he'd probably be just as good a receiver or an H-back," Palmer said, "a Percy Harvin-type player, because you've seen what he can do as a punt returner, obviously."

Palmer said he loves having Peterson in on offense.

"Obviously he can be very effective with the ball in his hands, but he's also effective on the field as a decoy," he said. "We've got a pretty big package in for a guy that's a defensive football player. That's something you have to prepare for, something you have to think about and worry about. Whether he touches the ball every time he's on the field or he doesn't touch it at all, he's a threat and he's something the defense has to prepare for and account for."

Javier Arenas or Peterson's former LSU teammate, Tyrann Mathieu, could spell Peterson as punt returner.

But, Arians said, "I don't really want to take too many touches away from him."

Arians said that if the defense has just endured a long drive, Peterson probably won't be in the game the next time Arizona has the ball. But Peterson said he put himself through tough offseason workouts to be prepared for just that.

"I practiced in pretty much weather like this back in south Florida, pretty humid, things like that," he said. "So my body can definitely take the wear and tear. I'm definitely prepared for whatever the coach needs me to do.

"I feel that I'm the best conditioned guy on the team, so running is not an issue for me."

With or without the ball.

Notes: RB Rashard Mendenhall missed his second straight day of practice with knee tendinitis but is expected back Monday, Arians said. ... RB Ryan Williams had another treatment on his ailing knee and Arians hope the injury-plagued back can return to practice after the Aug. 9 preseason opener at Green Bay, if not sooner. ... DT Darnell Dockett missed Friday and Saturday practices for personal reasons. ... The players have Sunday off.

Ad For Mark Wahlberg's New Football League Includes Horrible Photoshop Of Tim Tebow

The Elite Football League of India (EFLI) is a new American football league in India whose investors include Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Warner, and Mike Ditka.

Below is the ad that is currently seen on the EFLI Facebook page (via Uni-Watch) promoting the first home game for the Delhi Defenders against the?Kolkata Vipers. Clearly, that is just a picture of Tim Tebow in Broncos uniform flipped horizontally into a right-handed quarterback. They didn't even bother to fix the numbers, the Broncos watermark on the jersey, or the Reebok logo, all of which are now backwards.

Maybe Tebow sells in India also. If so, the league's new fans may be disappointed when Tebow doesn't show up...

Court documents: Las Cruces man admits to credit union robbery, says he was suicidal

LAS CRUCES >> The man accused of robbing a credit union Wednesday admitted to the crime, telling an investigator that he was suicidal and hoped police would shoot and kill him inside the financial institution, according to a complaint filed Friday in federal court.

Dominic Holland, 26 of Las Cruces, told a Las Cruces Police officer and FBI task force agent that he robbed the First Light Federal Credit Union on Wednesday morning. He had passed a note to a teller, then ran out of the bank with nearly $5,000.

Holland's initial appearance is set for Monday in federal court. He is being held at the Do?a Ana County Detention Center.

While he was inside the credit union, Holland said, he talked to a college professor who recognized him. Holland asked the professor to leave because "something bad was going to happen," according to the complaint. The professor stayed, and Holland knew he would be caught, he told investigators.

Holland ran to a nearby apartment complex, where he had been known to stay. LCPD officers found him there, and authorities accounted for all the missing cash.

Lawyer: Snowden has a place to live in Russia

MOSCOW (AP) ? National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden has a place to live in Russia after being granted temporary asylum, but he still hasn't decided what he wants to do next, his lawyer said Friday. The big question may be how much choice he actually has.

Russia granted a year of asylum to Snowden on Thursday, allowing him to quietly slip out of the Moscow airport where he had been holed up for almost six weeks as he evades charges of espionage in the United States. Authorities have suggested he will have wide freedom to work, but Kremlin watchers believe his moves are likely being closely controlled by Russian intelligence.

Snowden "is in a safe place," but the location will remain secret out of concern for his security, his lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, told Russian news agencies. The systems analyst who revealed himself as the source of reports in the Guardian newspaper of a vast U.S. Internet surveillance program needs time after his ordeal in airport limbo to figure out his next steps.

He was seen only once in his weeks in the transit zone of the Sheremetyevo airport. Despite troops of photographers and reporters camped out inside and outside the airport, no one apparently saw him leaving, except for someone who snapped a photo of Kucherena talking to blurry figures who the attorney later said were Snowden and Sarah Harrison, a WikiLeaks staffer who has been advising him.

Kucherena said he expects Snowden to speak to journalists soon. "As soon as he decides what he will do, I hope he will announce it himself," the ITAR-Tass news agency quoted the lawyer as saying.

The move to grant Snowden asylum infuriated the Obama administration, which said it was "extremely disappointed" and warned that the decision could derail an upcoming summit between President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The decision gives Russia cover to depict itself as a defender of human rights, pointing a finger to deflect criticism of its own poor record on rights including free speech. But the secrecy that surrounded Snowden's time at the Moscow airport and his unwillingness so far to talk to the press indicates he is being controlled by Russian intelligence, Andrei Soldatov, a Russian journalist who co-authored a book on the Russian intelligence services said.

"Does he have independent sources of information and communication? My impression is that he has none, which means he's not his own master," Soldatov said.

He said Kucherena's statements about concerns for Snowden's safety do not hold water.

"We are all perfectly aware that Snowden, who has just received asylum, does not face any danger in Russia," Soldatov said. "American intelligence does not kidnap or assassinate people in Russia, that's a fact. This is a just a pretext."

One of the reasons for keeping Snowden isolated may be to prevent him from speaking about the people he met and what really happened to him during the 39 days he spent in the airport's transit zone, Soldatov said. For the same reason, Soldatov said he expected Russian authorities to find a job for Snowden that will prevent him from having contacts with journalists.

Putin has denied that Russia's security services have worked with Snowden, either before or after he arrived in Moscow on a flight from Hong Kong. But security experts have said that Russia's intelligence agencies would not have passed up a chance to at least question a man who is believed to hold reams of classified U.S. documents and could shed light on how the U.S. intelligence agencies collect information.

Snowden's temporary asylum allows him to work in Russia, with some restrictions, said immigration lawyer Bakhrom Ismailov.

"Snowden has the same rights for employment as a Russian citizen except that he is not allowed to work as a public servant or take a job in law enforcement agencies," said Ismailov, a managing partner at Yurinvestholding. The founder of Russia's Facebook-like social network site VKontakte, has already made what sounded like a job offer on Twitter.

The law on temporary asylum says a person with this status is entitled "to receive assistance" in traveling out of Russia. Ismailov said that this assistance could mean issuing a travel document, but this is not normally done for people with temporary asylum.

Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia had offered Snowden asylum and he told human rights figures during a meeting in mid-July that he wanted to visit all those countries. But Kucherena said Thursday that Snowden no longer has such plans.

Courts order Apple to end e-books pacts

A digital book is displayed on an Apple Inc. iPad for a photograph in New York. (Scott Eells/Bloomberg)

Apple Inc., the world's biggest technology company, should be ordered to cancel existing agreements with five publishers after a judge's ruling that it conspired to fix prices of electronic books, the Justice Department said Friday.

The federal government and 33 states submitted the proposal in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. They called for a court-appointed antitrust compliance monitor and a requirement that Apple allow competitors to provide links from their e-book applications to their electronic bookstores.

Friday's proposal would require Apple to find a new way to do business with publishers.

"From a financial standpoint, this means nothing for Apple," John Bright, an analyst with Avondale Partners, said in an interview. "But strategically speaking it is a setback. I think Apple would now have to find different work- around solutions for pricing. They would use the same publishers but they would have to negotiate different solutions."

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote, after a nonjury trial in Manhattan, ruled July 10 against Apple. The company now faces another trial on damages. The proposal submitted today needs court approval to become effective.

"Under the department's proposed order, Apple's illegal conduct will cease and Apple and its senior executives will be prevented from conspiring to thwart competition in the future," Bill Baer, the assistant attorney general in charge of the antitrust division, said in a statement.

"The idea behind this proposal would certainly make the e- book industry more competitive," Bright said. "By definition, increased competitiveness in an industry leads to lower prices."

The U.S. sued Apple and five of the biggest publishers in April 2012, claiming that the technology company pushed publishers to allow it to sell digital copies of their books under a model that raised prices and harmed consumers.

Under that so-called agency model, publishers, not retailers, set book prices, with Apple getting 30 percent.

The publishers ? Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck's Macmillan unit, CBS's Simon & Schuster, Lagardere's Hachette Book Group, Pearson's Penguin unit and News Corp.'s HarperCollins ? settled with the government. Continued...

Under the Justice Department plan, the salary and expenses of the proposed external monitor would be paid by Apple. The person would work with an internal antitrust compliance officer who would be hired by and report to the outside directors on Apple's audit committee.

The government's proposal extends to media other than electronic books. It would prohibit Apple from entering agreements with suppliers of music, movies, TV shows and other content if those deals are likely to increase the prices at which their competitors sell them.

Tom Neumayr, a spokesman for Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple, declined to comment on the proposal.

A hearing on the proposal will be held Aug. 9.

Gay dads to sue church for right to religious wedding

Britain?s most famous surrogate gay dads have hired lawyers to sue the Church of England for the right to a full-blown religious wedding.

Barrie and Tony Drewitt-Barlow told Gay Star News it was important for them as Christians to marry in church and for their kids to see they were equal.

Under the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act for England and Wales, which has been signed into law but won?t be implemented until 2014, religious groups can opt in to marrying same-sex couples but don?t have to if they don?t want to.

The Church of England, the state religion, is protected by a quadruple lock to protect it from being forced to wed gay couples.

But the Drewitt-Barlows, from Essex, southeast England, attend their local parish church in the village of Danbury with their five children and want to marry there.

They told GSN: ?We actually feel that the government has done all it can do right now to push equality for same sex marriage in the right direction.

?However, there is still discrimination towards same-sex couples in terms of being allowed to marry in a church.

?It is important that we as Christians, are allowed to marry in the church we attend with our children. Even if our own vicar wanted to marry us, the fact still remains that he would not be allowed to under the current quadruple lock.

?There are many CofE members that want to see this happen as there are many that do not.?

Speaking to the Essex Chronicle, which broke the story, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, 42, that being given the right to marriage but not in the Church of England, was ?like someone giving me a sweetie with the wrapper on and telling me to suck it?.

They told GSN their children were a big influence on their decision to take action.

They said: ?It is important for us to show our children that we believe in equality across the board and that no peace offering to shut us up is going to work.?

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport, which oversaw the introduction of the new marriage law told us the quadruple lock protecting the Church of England was secure.

A spokeswoman said: ?There is no stopping anyone brining forward a claim but the likelihood of them being successful is pretty much non-existent.?

But the Drewitt-Barlows say they have hired lawyers and are pressing ahead despite this warning.

They said: ?[It] is a matter of opinion. There are legal pathways to go down and before we make a conclusive step forward we have to explore every avenue. We have been speaking to very senior legal advisors with Cannon Law experience who feel that there actually may be a case to answer.

?What the outcome maybe, is another question. We shall have to wait and see, but at the end of the day, the pressure will be highly visible and the church will be in the spot light again for discrimination against the same-sex community.?

And they said their ?biggest critics? are within the gay community.

They said LGBT people: ?Tell us we should be grateful for what we have and telling us we should not feel we are representing the gay community as a whole.

?Our simple answer to that is and always has been, we are not in any way, trying to represent the gay community. Every bit of campaigning we have ever done over the years has been and will always be for very personal reasons, it is and will continue to be for us and our family.

?If the gay community does benefit for any fight we decide to be involved in, then great. But we continue with the hope that one day we will be able to get married in our own CofE church with our family and close friends around us.?

The couple already had a civil partnership, giving them similar rights to married heterosexuals, in 2006. They became Britain's first gay surrogate parents in 1999.

How Eating Properly Can Eliminate Symptoms of Menopause and ...

What is the easiest and most natural way to eliminate the symptoms of PMS and menopause: hot flashes, mood swings, night sweat, and abdominal pain that would fell a line backer? Answer: Change your diet. Changing your diet will eliminate nutrients that trigger these symptoms (i.e. too much copper) and add nutrients that will bring your body back into biobalance (more zinc.) In this case, biobalance is getting your copper/zinc ratio back into biobalance. (For the scientific, that?s dividing the milligrams of copper in your body by the milligrams of zinc and getting a number between four and 12.)

Nexus 7 (2013) Review: The Best 7" Android Tablet Ever, But Better

I like tablets, and I love tablet apps. Don?t take that the wrong way - I love my Nexus 4, and I use it constantly, but there?s something different about tablets. A large, beautiful screen filled by an app that really shows off the functionality that comes with Android's design language is a great experience. Make that tablet super portable, fast, and priced right, and you?ve got my heart.

Okay, maybe that?s not all it takes for a tablet to win my heart. It takes a little more. In reviewing the new Nexus 7 (hereafter referred to as NN7), I wanted to find out for myself if Google?s newest seven-inch tablet is one that could win my affection - and use - both as a consumer and as a tech journalist.

That?s a tall order, but I?ve spent some quality time with the NN7 and I?m ready to dive into my honest thoughts.

front

In a Nutshell

To put it plainly, the Nexus 7 is a great tablet. Its few shortcomings are far outweighed by its superlative display, great sound, and overall design. If you're in the market for a seven-inch tablet (regardless of price), this is the one you want.

Specs

  • 7.02" IPS display at 1920x1200 (that's 323 ppi)
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • 5MP rear camera, 1.2MP front camera
  • 2GB RAM
  • Quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro
  • 16 or 32GB internal storage
  • Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
  • 3950mAh battery
  • Notification LED
  • Dual rear-facing speakers

Before diving in, here's a quick rundown of the Nexus 7's primary strengths and weaknesses.

The Good

  • The Display ? The Nexus 7 has a dazzling, sharp, contrasty, bright, all around great display. I love it. I haven't loved a mobile display like this since the Nexus 10.
  • The Sound ? Audio is produced at reasonably loud volumes with clarity and depth.
  • The Form Factor ? In my mind, this tablet is just the right size and shape for something under 10". It's big enough to be differentiated from my phone's display but small enough to hold comfortably and work quickly.
  • Performance ? I'm not a huge gamer, but the day-to-day tasks that I use the Nexus 7 for are executed masterfully, and Android is buttery-er than ever.

The Not So Good

  • Speaker Placement ? Going into my purchase I didn't think this would be a big deal, but the rear-facing speakers are kind of a sticking point. Sound is excellent, but I still feel compelled to hold my tablet in a way I wouldn't normally hold a rectangle so that I don't block the sound. And it is blockable.
  • Notification Light ? Having an LED notification light is actually a great thing, but with the new Nexus 7 there's a hitch ? it only seems to light up in one color. One of the things I love about the light on the N4 and N10 is that it is more functional and useful than a normal light, because different colors can alert you to different kinds of notifications.
  • No SD Card Slot ? This isn't a big deal for me personally, because I use very little local storage, but for a lot of people, the lack of SD support in Nexus devices continues to be problematic.

Closer Look

The Hardware (Outside)

The first thing anyone notices about a device is the hardware. The outside hardware, anyway. For the current Nexus line, the dominant visual feature is a black slab of glass. Shiny, elegant, and not just understated, but unstated altogether. Oh, and a notification light. The notification light is a good addition, but not as good as I'd hoped ? it appears to only light up white, making an app like Lightflow useless. This is problematic because while a notification LED is good, it isn't as good as it should be if it can't actually differentiate between types of notifications.

Knowing what kind of notification you have without turning anything on is a lot better than just knowing you have some kind of notification.

_DSC2906

Once you do turn it on, though, a bright, crisp, vivid, pixel-packed display will smack you in the eyeball. But more on that later.

But what about the reverse? The first thing you?ll notice about the NN7?s back side is that it has a soft touch coating that?s different from the old Nexus 7, the Nexus 4?s edge band, and the Nexus 10. If I had to draw a comparison to another existing Nexus though, I?d say the NN7 feels like a dry version of the Nexus 10. Still warm and comfortable, but just a teeny bit rougher. This is most likely due to the material the back is made of.

backmicro

The back also shows off a glossy inset Nexus logo situated horizontally if you hold the tablet in landscape mode, and an ASUS logo perpendicular to that along the bottom. You'll also find the tablet's dual stereo speakers and a 5MP camera, but we'll get to those soon enough.

The only physical buttons on the entire device are the power and volume keys. Strangely, these few buttons are kind of a problem area. They, like the Nexus logo on the back of the device, are glossy plastic, but the power button seems a little lopsided. From what I understand, I'm not alone in this experience. It's a minor quibble, but it doesn't bode well for the future of the button. Personally, I'd be fine if there were no buttons on the device whatsoever.

power

Overall the build quality feels pretty good. The more slender frame gives the Nexus 7 a more solid, weighty feel, even though the tablet weighs 50g less than its counterpart. The tablet, as I've said before, is also extremely easy to hold in one hand.

The Hardware (Inside)

Of course the most beautiful device is just as good as a really fancy paperweight if it doesn't actually perform. The Nexus 7, as detailed above, is packing 2GB RAM along with an S4 Pro chipset powered by a quad-core 1.5GHz Krait CPU and Adreno 320 GPU. (For a more graphic look at the NN7's insidey parts, check out iFixit's teardown).

It should be noted there has been some contention over the Nexus 7's SoC though ? according to AnandTech's mini-review, the NN7 sports DDR3 RAM and appears/behaves "more like an underclocked or lower binned Snapdragon 600."

Knowing all of this, the question has to be asked ? how does it perform? I won't spend time and space with a battery of benchmarks, but I will say that it shows solid performance. Granted I don't have a habit of playing games any more demanding than, say, Riptide GP2, but everything I do with the tablet is executed without effort, stutter, or the slightest hint of lag.

For those interested, we took a brief look at a couple of benchmarks shortly after the NN7's announcement.

The Display

This is probably my favorite part of the new Nexus 7. At 1920x1200, the display is no laughing matter ? Google touted it as the highest resolution seven inch display in existence.

_DSC2847

Whether or not you consider density to equal resolution, the display is impressive. It's a major improvement over the original Nexus 7 not just in terms of pixel density, but in color, contrast, and brightness as well ? the NN7 is capable of displaying a 30% wider range of color than its predecessor, and is very noticeably brighter and more contrasty when compared in real life.

To help you get an idea of just how much more densely-packed the display is, here's a quick comparison under the microscope:

image?image

Left: Nexus 7 2012 Right: New Nexus 7

The only issue I've noticed with the display might be a nocebo ? it seems like sometimes long press actions are very finicky, almost like the slightest wiggle of a finger might break the long press. Otherwise it's great.

The display has really driven home for me the idea that a seven-inch tablet is perhaps even more versatile than its 10" counterparts ? watching movies is a great experience, using apps, browsing the web, and passing emails are all pleasant, and ? here's where a 7" slate has the leg up ? reading is superb.

It's not that I hate reading on the Nexus 10 or other similarly sized tablets, it's just that a 7" tablet feels so much more? correct for the purpose. Maybe because it's closer to the size of an actual book.

Before I wax any further, let's move on to the speakers.

The Speakers

The NN7's speakers were one of the highlights of Sundar Pichai's breakfast get-together. Google was sure to point out that they worked with Fraunhofer to craft three-dimensional "surround sound" for the Nexus 7's dual speakers.

speaker

This sounds very fancy. While the sound on the NN7's speakers is good (comparable to the quality of the N10, plus some interesting effects that I might not necessarily describe as "surrounding" me), what we are essentially talking about is an added layer of software for digital audio processing that aims to make things sound better and more realistic.?

The one complaint I have with the speakers, as I pointed out in my initial hands-on, is that they are on the back right in the middle of the curve. When using the tablet in landscape mode I feel like I have to hold it a certain way, instead of just letting my hands cradle it naturally. That's not an ideal experience, whether the sound blockage is real or imagined.

The Camera

camera

The camera, in short, is not fantastic. It's decent, and it reminds me very much of the camera on the Nexus 4, but with a different resolution.

If your desire for a camera on your 7" tablet stems from the need to scan barcodes, you're all set. It handles regular photos pretty well too, if you're careful. Scenes with both bright and dark spots likely won't come out as even exposures, but if the scene you're looking to capture is well-lit, you've got nothing to worry about.

Personally the camera is a very small consideration for me, as I can count on one hand the number of times I've reached for my tablet specifically to take a photo.

IMG_20130802_182821IMG_20130802_181330?IMG_20130802_1820392IMG_20130802_190005

The front camera is precisely what you'd expect from a 1.2MP shooter. Passable for quick video calls, but don't expect to get a selfie printed at 11x14 for the mantle.

Video is much the same as still photography, but with motion and sound. The sound is kind of unpredictable, though. In the video sample below, listen carefully and you'll hear all kinds of weird blips and noises underlying the actual audio of the scene. In a scene that's not quite so quiet, this would likely be unnoticeable though.

Battery

The NN7 actually has a smaller battery capacity than the old Nexus 7 ? 3950 vs 4325mAh. Whether this decision was made to keep the NN7 svelte, or because Google took a very ambitious bet on Android 4.3's powers of battery preservation is unknown.

What I do know, however, is that the battery on the NN7 is decidedly decent. Though smaller than the old Nexus 7, and though it powers a dense display, the battery seems to last about a day and a half on a charge in my use case, or even longer if my use is lighter than normal. While I'm still waiting for that major shift in battery technology to bring me days and days of use, a couple of days on a charge is pretty good ? in recent memory, I haven't been away from a power outlet for more than a day.

The Nexus 7 is rated for 9 hours of "active use," but in my experience, streaming a half hour of video drained about 9% of the battery, putting its longevity at about five hours in that use case. Obviously when users are performing other tasks, the battery usage becomes a bit less formulaic.

When idle, as expected, the tablet will last much longer. Just how much longer is as yet unknown ? during my time reviewing the Nexus 7, I haven't left it alone long enough to get an accurate picture. That said, battery drain overnight is negligible.

Of course, your mileage may (and probably will) vary.

Charging

A lot of people were surprised to find out that the new Nexus 7 doesn't have pogo pins like the old one. Of course, the old Nexus 7 dock won't work with the NN7, but that's okay (right?) because it supports Qi wireless charging!

But um? don't plan on using the NN7 with the Nexus 4 charging orb without a slight hassle.

orb

While the device fits, it has to be in landscape orientation, and if you have any desire for the tablet to rest at a straight angle, you'll be fiddling with it for a while. The grippy ring on the orb is obviously meant for smoother surfaces ? it just doesn't hold as tightly to the textured back of the NN7.

If you don't mind all that, though, it'll certainly charge the device. I'm left wondering if Google plans to release a larger, perhaps grapefruit-sized charging orb (fingers crossed).

Android 4.3

_DSC2889-2

Since the NN7 is Android 4.3's launch device, it's worth taking a minute to look at the latest version bump. Probably the most important enhancement Google brought to Android in the latest release, as far as tablets like the NN7 are concerned, is restricted profiles. Basically this feature expands on existing multiuser functionality by opening up the possibility for restricted user profiles, whose access to apps, settings, or features can be limited.

This was an important move because it makes it far easier for parents to feel comfortable giving their child a tablet, or for anyone considering a tablet to share with the rest of the family. This, along with Google's moves to improve the Android tablet experience for education (both primary and beyond) will make the devices more appealing to new groups.

As Jeremiah rightly pointed out, restricted profiles really is the most user-facing new feature in 4.3, but other small tweaks, like the new Wi-Fi location scanning feature, Bluetooth Low Energy, and OpenGL ES 3.0 make the user experience better from behind the scenes.

While 4.3 isn't the dessert some may have been hoping for, it's definitely a respectable OS bump and does add to Android's overall experience.

The Content Elephant in the Room

Something that most outlets love to hate about Android tablets is the lack of specifically tablet-friendly apps.

It is true that my mind is not boggled by the number or quality of tablet oriented, optimized, or even compatible apps, but maybe we're looking for the wrong thing.

Matias Duarte, in an interview with the Verge following the introduction of the original Nexus 7, explained that experiences should be uniform but adaptive across screen sizes, using Twitter's iOS app as an example of how changing the experience between form factors has the potential to be disruptive to the user's overall experience with the product (and, if I may extrapolate, their experience of the brand).

Rather than searching high and low for apps that specifically call themselves out as being made for tablets, we should instead be looking at apps that adapt to the tablet screen. This means considering how to move away from large phone interfaces and toward something that provides the same experience at a different size. The Google+ app is a great example of this, across phones, 7" tablets, and 10" tablets.

I think the other thing to consider is what you'll be doing on the tablet. Besides apps and games, a huge portion of my time with the Nexus 7 is spent consuming media, be it music, movies, tv, or other videos.

Media content is an area where the Play Store has really grown up fast lately, and while it still has some catching up to do, you will absolutely not be at a loss for content on the new Nexus 7.

Conclusion

In the end, is the Nexus 7 worth its $229 price of entry? In my opinion, it absolutely is.

If you're in the market for a seven-inch slate, or if you're just looking for an all-around great tablet, the Nexus 7 won't disappoint. It's got a sharp design, a great display, and it runs like a champ. In pretty much every category, it beats the seven-inch Google-branded tablet that ? at the time ? beat all other Android tablets.

As I said earlier, its few shortcomings are far outweighed by its strengths, and a low price point doesn't hurt it, either.

After 8 defiant years, Ahmadinejad leaves Iran isolated and cash-strapped

Iran's most divisive president since the 1979 revolution initially won praise, but his successor is now tasked with undoing the damage Ahmadinejad wrought at home and abroad.

By Scott Peterson,?Staff writer / August 2, 2013

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaks during Friday prayers ceremonies, after attending an annual nation-wide pro-Palestinian rally marking Jerusalem Day, in Tehran, Iran, today. Mr. Ahmadinejad made his final public speech as president today before he steps down and Hassan Rohani comes to power, bringing with him expectations of sweeping change.

Iran?s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad today ascended to the global stage one last time, capping his tumultuous eight-year presidency with an anti-Israel harangue that made no mention of the political damage he is widely perceived as inflicting upon the Islamic Republic and its leadership.?

Damage control from Mr. Ahmadinejad?s legacy at home and abroad is sure to absorb much of the early work of the incoming centrist President-elect Hassan Rohani, who brings with him expectations of sweeping change.?

The cleric and former nuclear negotiator has promised an economic turnaround, easing Iran?s isolation, nuclear ?transparency,? and above all, moderation. He will be sworn into office?on Sunday.?

There are already promising signs. Although they lean conservative,?Mr. Rohani?s cabinet selections span much of Iran?s wide political spectrum, indicating that the new president is trying to avoid past pitfalls.?

?It?s exactly the opposite of Ahmadinejad?s closed circle of people,? says a veteran analyst in Tehran who asked not to be named. ?Rohani is choosing from various groups of people. This is a lesson learned: If you keep everyone to some degree happy, there is more chance of achieving something, and less hew and cry when he makes a decision that seems controversial.?

?Out of the negativity of Ahmadinejad has appeared something that we predicted would come years ago, but didn?t come: a new power in the center that would grow to include moderates from both sides,? says the analyst. ??

The downward spiral

By far Iran?s most divisive president since the 1979 Islamic revolution, Mr. Ahmadinejad?s populist tactics, humble origins as a blacksmith?s son, and fearless attacks against Israel, Zionism, and most famously the Holocaust, won him early praise at home and across the Middle East.

But his fraud-tainted reelection in 2009 ? in which Iran?s supreme religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called Ahmadinejad?s victory a ?divine assessment? that could not be challenged ??sparked months of?protests that were crushed violently, and a spiral of economic mismanagement and unprecedented challenges to Mr. Khamenei?s own power.

Not only did Ahmadinejad increasingly view his post as an imperial presidency ? racking up in one year a record 4,943 notifications from parliament for failing to implement the law ??but his second term saw a surge in US-led global sanctions against Iran and dangerous deadlock in nuclear talks.

?The more [Ahmadinejad] challenged the very foundations of the Islamic regime such as the legislative bodies, the more he was seen as a threat to the country and the Islamic system,? says another political analyst in Tehran, who also asked not to be named.

Ahmadinejad stood up to Khamenei over several top appointments, would sometimes sulk for days, and frequently threatened (?Should I say? Should I say?? he would ask) to expose high-level wrongdoing among political enemies gleaned from intelligence files.

?His challenges to the Leader weakened both [and] actually broke a taboo,? says the second analyst. ?Ahmadinejad?s presence in power has weakened the position of the Leader in society and among political players?. Ahmadinejad?s challenge had one result: Diminishing [Khamenei?s] authority.?

From regime darling to outsider

Iran experts say the apparently clean conduct of the mid-June election that gave Rohani just over half the overall count, more than all five of his harder-line conservative opponents combined, has by itself begun to repair the damage wrought by both Ahmadinejad and the 2009 events. ??

Yet today, instead of trying to polish his own legacy for the history books, Ahmadinejad marked Jerusalem Day ??which in Israel marks the reunification of the ancient city ? in typical combative fashion, claiming that American leaders were ?all? Zionists; that US presidents had to ?kneel in front of Zionism? before becoming candidates; and that viruses had been released around the world in order to sell vaccines at higher prices.

?Your happiness will not last long. The main wave of awakening is just ahead?. You have no place in our region,? the outgoing president warned, according to a simultaneous translation by state-run PressTV. ?A storm is on the way, I?m sure, and that will annihilate the Zionist regime.??

Few listen to Ahmadinejad in Iran anymore, and politicians and newspapers have been scathing in their assessments both of his record, and of his mishandling of facts. Since the president?s tussle with Khamenei?s over the choice of intelligence minister in 2011, it has been open season against Ahmadinejad even from fellow conservatives, who accused him of leading a ?deviant current,? and of ?sorcery? among his top aides.

In interviews this week, Ahmadinejad said he had not passed a ?red light? in ignoring the law and that is was his job to ?safeguard? the constitution. But Iranian media listed the presidential highlights as a $2.6 billion fraud by top officials, and only 542,000 jobs created in eight years, not the 7 million claimed by the government.?

The head of Rohani?s transition team, Akbar Torkan, told Shargh newspaper that many of the ?facts? presented by Ahmadinejad?s government to Khamenei were wrong, and an apparent bid to burnish achievements. Torkan said the outgoing cabinet reported building 63,500 kilometers (almost 40,000 miles) of road, for example, but that the actual figure was a quarter that, with the rest only maintenance of rural roads.

?There are similar mistakes? that have made the reports inaccurate,? Mr. Torkan said.

Pithily, the powerful conservative lawmaker Ahmad Tavakoli told Etemaad newspaper: ?Ahmadinejad is the third millennium?s wonder and will never be repeated.?

Indeed, parliamentarian Ali Motahari responded this week to calls for apologies before any release from house arrest of two former 2009 presidential candidates, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, who led the Green Movement protests.

?If these two must apologize, is there not a need for an apology from Mr. Ahmadinejad, who prepared the firewood of sedition with his behavior and opinion?? Mr. Motahari asked.

The butt of jokes?

Another key correction will be restoration of a management body, after Ahmadinejad dismantled the Management and Planning Organization.

Under the slogan of change, Ahmadinejad broke the circuit of experienced managers who moved from job to job in the Islamic system, kicking them out to make way for a new generation.

?The idea was good, but the way he did it was a disaster,? says the first Tehran analyst. ?He was so pessimistic toward intellectuals, towards bureaucrats, technocrats, typical of somebody who came from below with all the complexes and with all the problems.??

The diminutive president ? whose aides would quietly push a step up to the podium before speeches, so Ahmadinejad would reach the microphones ? was a flamboyant speaker who oversaw a bid to expand Iran?s ?soft power? in South America, Africa and the Middle East, and reveled in the launch of Iran?s first space satellites, and its scientific nuclear and nanotechnology progress.?

He declared Iran a ?superpower, real and true,? and in 2008 said the Shiite Messiah, the Mahdi, was in charge of the Islamic Republic?s destiny. In fact, his barely hidden belief in the Mahdi?s imminent return was greeted by many clerics as superstitious politicking.

?We see the hand of this holy management every day. God knows that we see it,? Ahmadinejad declared.

In the first 100 days of Ahmadinejad?s rule in 2005, Iranians joked that in that short time he had spawned more jokes than every one of Persia?s long line of presidents, monarchs, and rulers combined.?

Today, one of the many jokes among Iranians is that Ahmadinejad should now be put into a museum, and exhibited every time someone says they don?t want to vote. It refers to the 2005 election, when many supporters of Ahmadinejad?s rivals stayed at home and ?did not believe the danger? his presidency would create.?

Lauren Silverman and Simon Cowell.

Yesterday, Simon Cowell sort of, kind of, spoke about the baby his friend's wife Lauren Silverman is carrying ? neither confirming nor denying that the child was his. Now, Silverman and her husband (who is divorcing her) have made their first public statements about the story.

"My top priority is protecting my 7-year-old son while working to resolve all outstanding issues with my wife," Andrew Silverman?told People magazine in a statement. "Hopefully people can respect the interest of our child during this process."

E! caught Lauren Silverman on Thursday with their son in Bridgehampton, N.Y, where the family has a home, sporting the baby bump. She also released a statement on Thursday through her attorneys.?

"I am committed to sorting things out with Andrew as amicably as possible to ensure the well-being of our son. I would hope for some space and privacy in order to work through this," she?told E! in a statement.

Additionally, her lawyers said, "We are working to resolve this situation in a fair and reasonable way that protects the best interests of our client and her son."

Andrew Silverman filed for divorce two weeks ago and the New York Daily News reported that he'd named Cowell as a co-respondent along with his wife, stating adultery was the reason their marriage had to end.

E! noted that Cowell's reps may hold a press conference early next week to address the story.

NM exhibit shines light on rare Beatles photos

TAOS, N.M. (AP) ? Snow and frigid temperatures didn't stop thousands of screaming teenagers from crowding into the Washington Coliseum in the nation's capital for the Beatles first live concert on American soil.

And not having a flash didn't stop photographer Mike Mitchell, then just 18 years old, from using his unrestricted access to document that historic February night in 1964 using only the dim light in the arena.

Ghostly shadows and streams of light filled some negatives. With the help of modern technology and close to 1,000 hours in front of the computer screen, Mitchell was able to peel back decades of grunge and transform those old negatives into a rare, artful look at one of pop culture's defining moments.

Mitchell's portraits of the Beatles are the centerpiece of a monthlong exhibition at the David Anthony Fine Art gallery in Taos ? the first time the prints have been exhibited since being unveiled in 2011 at a Christie's auction in New York City. The gallery started hanging the first of the framed prints a week ago in preparation for Friday's opening.

"Just amazing," gallery owner David Mapes said as he looked around the room at the large black and white prints and wondered aloud what it must have been like to be in Mitchell's shoes that night.

Mapes pointed to a photograph of the four band members, their backs to the camera with a thin ribbon of light outlining their silhouettes. When he first saw it, he said he teared up. He knew he had to find a way to share it with others.

"It brought back memories of that time. I was a teenager and it was so much about love and everything was optimistic feeling," he said.

It didn't take long from the time the Beatles released their debut album in 1963 to go from a little British bar band to an international sensation. The Beatles' reach eventually stretched beyond music and haircuts to religion and politics.

"The Beatles came to represent some of the yearnings for peace and hope and equality and a larger social justice. In the United States and throughout the world, their personalities became as important as the music," said Norman Markowitz, a history professor at Rutgers University.

For Paul Vance, who teaches a class on the Beatles at Winona State University in Minnesota, the band was the reason he pursued music. He was 11 years old when the Beatles first came to the U.S.

The Beatles had good timing, he said, having arrived at a time when America was still heartbroken over the assassination of then-President John F. Kennedy and young people were looking for meaning in their lives.

"Much has been said and written about it," Vance said of the Beatles' influence. "It's a very significant point that the world after the Beatles was a radically different place than the world before the Beatles, and they did influence and change so many aspects of not just American life, but life everywhere."

Mitchell can't predict what role his photographs will play as historians and music fans continue to examine the evolution of American pop culture. Still, those moments captured by his camera that February night tell a grainy story of four young men who seemed to be having the time of their lives.

Mitchell remembers how hot it was inside the coliseum. The crowd was deafening but the resonating bass beats were unmistakable. He said the Beatles were "on fire" that night.

"They were really juiced. It was obvious at the time that they were really, really, really into it and I think the pictures really benefit from that," he said.

Mitchell said his goal was simple. He wanted to make great portraits of the Beatles while discovering a little more about who they really were.

With no flash, he was forced to wait for the perfect time to snap that shutter. His photographs immortalized the important details of the moment in a bath of light while the rest faded into darkness. It was the concert that marked the beginning of his fascination with light.

"I think that was the first time in my life that I had to really look more deeply at light and take my queues from what the light was doing," he said. "I learned to sort of feel from the light."
