The CDC has labeled narcotic medication prescription abuse as an epidemic. Studies from the last few years have shown that well over 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, which represents over 30% of the population. There is a significant knowledge deficit about pain management and narcotics in America and there have been stereotypes forms regarding opiate medication which is turning legitimate pain management patients into becoming embarrassed. They feel they will be looked at as drug seeking individuals even with their legitimate complaints being exposed to the doctor.
It is time for numerous things to happen with pain management in America. More modern medications with less addictive side effects should be produced. Additional research is necessary in pain management because of its epidemic status.
Also there is a deficit of pain management education in this country. A larger amount needs to be provided to the existing medical community regarding chronic pain and management of it so that patients will not feel so embarrassed. Public service announcement should also be put in the place due to the epidemic status of what were facing.
