EUGENE, Ore. - The Eugene City Council plans to make a proclamation in honor of the Rose Bowl champion Oregon Duck football team at a meeting Monday night.
What remains to be seen is whether the City and University will celebrate the Duck victory with a parade.
The two institutions collaborated on the "Celebrating Champions" parade after the Ducks lost the BCS National Championship game to Auburn a year ago.
Mayor Kitty Piercy, fielding questions from constituents, said on her Facebook page that the City wants to throw a parade but that the UO is hesitant to take part due to a recent change in leadership. The State Board of Higher Education ousted President Richard Lariviere. An interim president started Monday.
"We have been in discussion with the U of O regarding a parade or another type of event," Piercy posted on Facebook. "It appears that given the recent change in leadership, the search for a new president and the big effort that was put into the Rose Bowl activities, they are reluctant to have a parade. I'll keep trying to find a path to a community celebration.
"Stay tuned," she said. "Students have been out of town and Chip (Kelly) has been out recruiting."
Julie Brown from UO Media Relations told KVAL News it's not an unwillingness to have a parad, but more of a scheduling conflict. She saids this is a very busy time for coaches and players heading back to classes.
