Demand drives TVA renewable energy projects

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Tennessee Valley Authority has approved more than 250 small-scale renewable energy projects for 2013, the overwhelming majority relying on solar energy.

TVA officials say the demand for renewable energy projects across the Tennessee Valley is strong ? so strong that the agency has met its application goals for 2013.

TVA has been working with local power companies since January to approve applications for renewable energy systems as part of its Green Power Providers program. Officials say all but two of the 250 projects are solar installations.

The agency has also met its application goals under the Solar Solutions Initiative pilot program, which promotes green jobs in the region.

TVA is a corporate agency of the U.S. government that provides power to 9 million people in seven southeastern states.

Phil Jackson Was Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer in 2011, Told the ...

phil-jackson-lakers

Phil Jackson was diagnosed with prostate cancer in March 2011, the former Lakers? coach reveals in his new book. According to the O.C. Register, Jackson revealed the bad news to his team during the playoffs as what sounds like an attempt to motivate. (The story is behind a paywall, but a?Lakers? forum?has the full story.)

Jackson was diagnosed with prostate cancer in March 2011. After doctors assured him the cancer could be controlled by drugs temporarily, Jackson waited until after the season to undergo surgery.

Jackson decided to divulge his situation to his players when he sensed the team was lacking something in the playoffs.

?Shocking,? Pau Gasol said Saturday, remembering Jackson?s disclosure to the team. ?But then you also could understand certain moments of his demeanor, energy and involvement because of what he was going through health-wise. It explained certain things. It was a shock. A difficult moment for the team.?

Gasol said Jackson talked with team captains Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher privately before telling the whole team in a video session ? but Jackson was left second-guessing the revelation in which he became teary-eyed as he spoke ? the Lakers strangely fading in that series vs. Dallas.

Whatever Jackson?s motivation for telling his team, it sounds like they were understandably shaken by the news. Whenever Jackson told them, the team was done. The Lakers were eliminated from the 2011 Playoffs by the eventual champion Dallas Mavericks in a 4-game sweep. The series ended with a 122-86 blowout in Dallas that featured?Andrew Bynum?s flagrant foul on J.J. Barea.

Gasol allowed that it was different for the team to see Jackson ? ?such a big figure, the physical and spiritual leader of the team? ? as vulnerable.

?As much as I love Phil and I appreciate everything about him,? Gasol said, ?it was difficult to know.?

The good news ? for Jackson at least ? is that he must be feeling pretty good again. People say he is interested in coaching again and there is a rumor about every team in the league making a run at him for various positions.

Boston suspects' father postpones trip to US

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) ? The father of the two Boston bombing suspects said Sunday that he has postponed a trip from Russia to the United States because of poor health.

"I am really sick," Anzor Tsarnaev, 46, told The Associated Press. He said his blood pressure had spiked to dangerous levels.

Tsarnaev said at a news conference Thursday that he planned to leave that day or the next for the U.S. with the hope of seeing his younger son, who is under arrest, and burying his elder son, who was killed. His family, however, indicated later Thursday that the trip could be pushed back because he was not feeling well.

Tsarnaev confirmed on Sunday that he is staying in Chechnya, a province in southern Russia, but did not specify whether he was hospitalized. He is an ethnic Chechen and has relatives in Chechnya, although he and his family spent little time in Chechnya or anywhere else in Russia before moving to the U.S. a decade ago.

He and the suspects' mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, returned to Russia last year and settled in Makhachkala, the capital of neighboring Dagestan, where Tsarnaeva's relatives live.

During the past week, they were both questioned extensively by U.S. investigators who had traveled to Makhachkala from Moscow. They also were besieged by journalists who staked out their home.

Tsarnaev's family said last week that he intended to get to the U.S. by flying from Grozny, the Chechen capital, to Moscow. He and Tsarnaeva left Dagestan on Friday, but their whereabouts were unclear.

LG Optimus F5 midrange LTE smartphone hits France April 29, global dispersion to follow

LG's F-series handsets may not be in the same class an HTC One or GS4, but we can't help but appreciate the solid specs and LTE-goodness baked into these mid-range devices. Following a debut alongside its F7 sibling at MWC, the F5 will begin trickling out to French retailers on April 29th. While there's no mention of US availability -- despite a recent leak pegging it for Verizon -- we do know LG will soon be pushing it out to parts of Asia and Central / South America. Aimed at markets new to LTE, the smartphone packs a beefy 2,150mAh battery, 5-megapixel camera, 1.2GHz dual-core processor and a 4.3-inch screen for showing off LG's skinned version of Android 4.1.2. If you're curious to give LTE a go and this looks like a winner, you'll find the full press release after the break.

Posnanski: Harvey more than New York hype

Mets' young ace joining ranks of baseball's all-time great pitching phenoms

Los Angeles Dodgers v New York MetsGetty Images

Matt Harvey's numbers in his first 15 starts are the third-best baseball has seen since World War II.

BY JOE POSNANSKI

NBCSports.com

updated 3:28 a.m. ET April 27, 2013

The New York Mets? Matt Harvey might be off to the greatest start for a starting pitcher in more than 50 years. That sounds like a lot of New York hype, but it shows up in the numbers and comparisons. Through 15 starts, the numbers suggest, Matt Harvey has been about as good as anybody starting a career since World War II.

But, really, the wonder of a pitching prodigy like Harvey goes beyond numbers or comparisons. It?s a feeling. There?s something about a pitching prodigy that gets the blood pumping a little faster. There?s something about a pitching prodigy that feels unlimited.

Why? Maybe it?s because the pitcher is unique in sports. He has the ball. He starts every play. He has his own mound. The pitcher is the only athlete in sports that is credited with a win or a loss. You could argue -- I have argued many times -- that it?s silly to credit a pitcher with a win or loss. We do it anyway and have for more than a hundred years. We don?t do that for a quarterback or a point guard or a goaltender or a goalkeeper. *

*Every now and again, you will hear someone talk about a quarterback?s or goaltender?s ?won-loss record,? but that?s a little bit different. The language is different. You might say, ?The Patriots are 136-39 in games that Tom Brady starts.? You would not say, ?Tom Brady completed 30 of 42 passes and earned his fifth victory of the season.? It?s a subtle but important distinction. Pitchers are the only ones who turn plural to singular, the one ones naturally fit the sentence: ?James Shields picked up the win, while David Price took his third loss of the year.?

So, when a young pitcher shows up like Matt Harvey with insane fastballs and exploding sliders ? there?s something magical about it. Something unlimited. A quarterback, even a perfect one, needs receivers, an offensive line, a running game, a shrewd offensive coordinator. A basketball player, no matter how good, cannot take on five defenders at a time. A pitcher, though, has the ball. He is only limited by the imagination.

And so every time a Hideo Nomo or Dwight Gooden or Matt Harvey shows up on the scene, the possibilities are endless. In many ways, I?ve marked my baseball life by the pitching phenoms who kept showing up.

* * *

I have no memory of Steve Rogers when he came up as a 23-year-old pitcher for Montreal. My memories of Rogers come from when he was older, that big mustache, the hair fighting to get out from under his red and blue eMb cap (Les Expos de Montreal Baseball), the glove arm sticking out to the left, the way he kicked the dirt on his follow through so that it seemed he might just fall forward and roll toward home plate.

But when Rogers first arrived on the scene as a 23-year-old former college superstar at the University of Tulsa, he was all but unhittable. He pitched a one-hit shutout at Philadelphia in his second start and followed it with a shutout in New York against the Mets. Through 15 games, he was 9-4 with a 1.32 ERA. Batters were hitting .192 against him.

He was in Montreal, of course, playing for a terrible Expos team. So it seems like his amazing start did not get the fanfare of some of the other phenoms of my lifetime. There was no ?RogersMania.?

Rogers would go on to be a fine pitcher, winning 158 games and leading the league in ERA in 1982. ?He was a five-time All-Star. But to me his pitching years -- and his Expos teams -- were always tinged with a kind of sadness and unfulfilled potential. The Expos should have won championships. Rogers should have won Cy Young Awards. They were good, but it always seemed like they should have been a little better.

* * *

While, I do not remember Steve Rogers? debut, I have very strong memories of The Bird. Every baseball fan my age or older has those memories of Mark Fidrych. I was 9 when The Bird came up to the Detroit Tigers, and that was the perfect age to be for his act. The Bird talked to the baseball (or talked to himself, it was never entirely clear). He smoothed out the mound with his hands. And, of course, he looked like Big Bird, which was why he got the nickname in the first place.

He was like a superhero in a Detroit Tigers? uniform. I?m semi-serious about that. You have to understand that to a boy of the 1970s, the line between comic books and real life people was hopelessly blurred. Was Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man, real or fake? Fake? Well, then, how about Evel Knievel jumping over busses on his motorcycle? Oh, he was real. The Superman ads said, ?You will believe a man can fly,? and Fonzie started jukeboxes by simply hitting them, and Elvis Presley wore capes, and Nolan Ryan threw pitches 102 mph, and Roger Staubach (who they called Captain America) kept bringing the Cowboys back from certain defeat, and Muhammad Ali let George Foreman tire himself out by leaning against the ropes and taking every punch he could throw. What was real anyway?

Then, Mark Fidrych appeared in this blurry world, 21 years old, and he talked to the ball, and he wouldn?t pitch with the same ball that had given up a hit, and he did this little walk around the mound after each out, and it was wonderful. He didn?t have the Nolan Ryan fastball or Sandy Koufax?s curve. Instead, he had voodoo, crazy confidence, a heavy sinker and a rubber arm.

Here is the best baseball statistic you will here today: In Fidrych?s first 13 starts in the major leagues, he threw 120 1/3 innings.? I?ll do the math for you -- that averages out to MORE than nine innings per start. He completed 12 of those 13 games, and that included three different games where he pitched 11 innings.

He won Rookie of the Year, and he should have won the Cy Young Award in 1976 (he didn?t because he didn?t win 20 games), and then he was never the same. He had injuries. Well, what the Tigers did to him, allowing him to complete 24 games in his rookie season and throw a million pitches under duress would be viewed as criminal negligence today. But, like I say, back then the line between superhero and regular guy wasn?t as easy to see. Nobody thought the Fidrych magic would ever end.

2 policemen shot in Rome as Italy gets new govt

ROME (AP) ? An unemployed bricklayer shot two Italian policemen in a crowded square outside the premier's office Sunday just as the nation's new government was being sworn in, investigators said.

The gunman's intended target was politicians, a top Italian official said after interviewing him.

Mired in recession and suffering from soaring unemployment, Italy has been in political paralysis since an inconclusive February election. Social and political tensions have been running high among voters divided between center-left, conservative and anti-government political parties.

Sunday was supposed to be a hopeful day when debt-ridden Italy finally got new government to solve its many problems. But shots rang out in Colonna Square near a busy shopping and strolling area shortly after 11:30 a.m. just as Premier Enrico Letta and his new ministers were taking their oaths at the Quirinal presidential office about a kilometer (half mile) away.

The suspected gunman, dressed in a dark business suit, was immediately grabbed by other police outside Chigi Palace, which houses the premier's office and other government offices. The politicians were supposed to have met at the palace later Sunday for their first Cabinet meeting.

Rome Prosecutor Pierfilippo Laviani told reporters he had questioned the alleged assailant, who was taken to a hospital with bruises after being wrestled to the ground. He identified the man as Luigi Preiti, 49, from Calabria, a southern agricultural area plagued by organized crime and chronic unemployment.

Laviani said Preiti had "confessed everything" and didn't appear mentally unbalanced.

"He is a man full of problems, who lost his job, who lost everything," the prosecutor said. "He was desperate. In general, he wanted to shoot at politicians, but given that he couldn't reach any, he shot at the Carabinieri" paramilitary police.

One of the policemen, shot in the neck, was in critical condition. The other, shot in the leg, suffered a fracture, doctors said.

The shooting "was the tragic gesture of a 49-year-old unemployed man," Interior Minister Angelino Alfano told reporters after briefing Letta and his new Cabinet.

A woman passing by during the shooting was slightly injured, Rome's mayor said. It was unclear if she was grazed by a bullet or hurt in the panic sparked by the gunfire.

The 46-year-old Letta had nailed down a coalition deal only a day ago between two bitter political enemies ? his center-left forces and the conservative bloc of ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi. Letta will speak to Parliament on Monday, laying out his strategy to reduce joblessness while still sticking to the austerity measures needed to keep the eurozone's No. 3 economy from descending into a sovereign debt crisis. He will then face confidence votes.

A video surveillance camera on the Parliament building caught the attacker on film just before and during the shooting, Italian news reports said.

The attacker was walking at a steady pace along a narrow street that leads from the square outside Parliament's lower house to the square outside the premier's office, when police officers appear to have stopped him to ask where he was going.

About 90 minutes later, Letta and his ministers were due to enter Chigi Palace. It was not immediately known if the attacker knew about their arrival.

Shortly after police approached him, he began firing, according to the surveillance camera.

An AP television producer saw the two wounded Carabinieri officers in the square outside the palace. One of them lay on the pavement with blood pouring out of his neck.

Alfano said the alleged gunman wanted to kill himself after the shooting but ran out of bullets. He said six shots were fired in all. The gunman used a semi-automatic pistol whose serial number had been scraped off, Sky TG24 TV said.

The interior minister said security was immediately stepped up near key venues in the Italian capital, but added authorities were not worried about possible related attacks.

"Our initial investigation indicates the incident is due to an isolated gesture, although further investigations are being carried out," he said.

Doctors at Rome's Umberto I Polyclinic said a 50-year-old brigadier had been hit in the neck by a bullet that damaged his spinal column and was lodged near his shoulder. The doctors said it wasn't yet known if the spinal column injury had caused any paralysis.

The head of St. John's Hospital, Gianluigi Bracciale, told Sky TG24 TV the second officer suffered a broken leg from a gunshot. He said Prieti didn't appear to have any injuries other than bruises.

Preiti's uncle, interviewed by Sky, said the alleged gunman had moved back to his parents' home in Calabria because he could no longer find work as a bricklayer. "He was a great worker. He could build a house from top to bottom," said the uncle, Domenco Preiti.

The shooting sparked ugly memories of the 1970s and 1980s in Italy, when domestic terrorism plagued the country during a time of high political tensions between right-wing and left-wing blocs.

The new Cabinet ministers were seen smiling in a group photo as news of the shooting broke.

"The news arrived after the swearing-in," said Dario Franceschini, one of the new ministers.

The ministers were kept briefly inside for security reasons until it was clear there was no immediate danger.

Rome was jammed Sunday with tourists and residents enjoying a warm sunny morning on the last day of a four-day weekend.

"The English Teacher" follows footsteps of "Weeds," "Nurse Jackie"

By Ellen Wulfhorst

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Fans of "Nurse Jackie," "Weeds," and "The Big C" will recognize the quirky lead of "The English Teacher" as she steps out of her straight-laced life to encounter unexpected consequences, the movie's director said in an interview.

In "The English Teacher," which has its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday, lead character Linda Sinclair, played by Julianne Moore, tries to mount a high school production of a play written by a former student (Michael Angarano) who has returned to his small hometown in Pennsylvania.

With the help of Nathan Lane as the high school's drama teacher and Greg Kinnear as the playwright's father, putting on the production leads almost everyone involved into trouble.

Directing the tale is Craig Zisk, who has dozens of well-regarded television series under his belt as producer or director, including "Parks and Recreation," "The Big C," "Nip/Tuck," "Weeds" and "Scrubs."

"Most of the shows that I either produced or directed feature very strong female leads," Zisk said in an interview with Reuters, ticking off the names of Mary-Louise Parker in "Weeds," Laura Linney in "The Big C," Toni Collette in "United States of Tara" and Edie Falco in "Nurse Jackie."

"With these incredibly talented strong women, I was really attracted to that when I read the script," he said.

"They are all very flawed characters," he added. "In the case of Linda, she's actually someone trying to do the right thing ... even though every time she tries to do something nice for somebody, it backfires and blows up in her face."

"The English Teacher" is Zisk's first feature film, an undertaking he said he weighed for five years before finding the right movie to make. Zisk is a four-time primetime Emmy nominee.

"I know how important the first feature is, especially for someone coming from television, because in the past there's kind of been a knock on television directors and people getting one shot," he said.

But apart from the obvious appeal of branching out, he said that making a film rather than a television show gave him the unprecedented luxury of time to prepare and an autonomy he enjoyed.

"The producers pretty much left me on my own, which was really great," Zisk said. "I feel like I made the movie I wanted to make."

Being distributed domestically by Cinedigm Entertainment Group and Tribeca Film, "The English Teacher" opens in theaters on May 17. It also can be found on-demand on television.

Things You Should Know When Planning A Vacation To Vietnam

If you are a first time traveler to Vietnam, the noise and chaos of the cities bustling with traffic and people can come as quite a shock. But amidst all this hustle and bustle, is a country with immense beauty and friendly people. It is a country famous for its breathtaking countryside, excellent food, beautiful and relaxing beaches and cheap massages.

Choosing a vacation package that suits you

Although Vietnam is growing at a fast pace, it still has not developed into a concrete jungle filled with skyscrapers. It still has plenty of its old world charm about it. It is a great destination to consider when you are planning your next vacation. There are several Vietnam vacation packages available to choose from. They have adventure packages, beach and island packages, honeymoon packages, family packages, veterans packages, heritage packages and more. You can always find one that will suit you best. When planning a vacation, you have the option of choosing from pre-set Vietnam vacation packages or you could get one customized to suit you. A customized vacation package will give you the freedom of choosing the places you want to visit, sights you want to see and the date you want to travel.

Tips that can help you save money

When planning a vacation or trip to Vietnam, here are some tips that might help you save some money. Book your air tickets well in advance (at least 4 months or more) as this is normally the time airlines start to discount tickets. Travelling in a group could offer you better discounts on air tickets, hotels and attractions. Get tips and advice regarding cheap Vietnam travel packages and accommodation from a friend or a person who has visited the places you are planning on seeing. What someone has experienced personally will be a lot more helpful. Travelling during the off-peak season or visiting a place that is not so popular with tourists is another way of saving money.

Useful tips on what not to carry to Vietnam

If you have already decided on what type of holiday you want from the choice from the Vietnam travel packages available and how you are going to travel within the country, here are some tips and advice on what is illegal there and what not to carry to the country when you are visiting the country. Illegal drugs and weapons are prohibited. Anyone caught with them are dealt with severely and could even be sentenced to death. Carrying any anti-government propaganda or literature is not allowed and you can be heavily reprimanded. For example: if you are carrying a map of the country ensure that the expanse of water next to Vietnam reads as the Eastern Sea and not the South China Sea as this could be considered as anti-government material. Carrying pornography is illegal in Vietnam. Avoid wearing expensive jewellery or carrying any expensive electronic items and these can easily be robbed. If you must carry these items, ensure the straps are thick and they are carried across the body. Keep your mobile phone in a pocket with a zipper. If you need to use the phone dont stand facing the street when using it turn towards the inside, as it could be snatched out of your hand easily by a thief on a bike.

Internet Marketing Sgencies | Entrepreneurs Lead

7If you want to jump-start your life and your business, you have to know what type of Internet Marketing Sgencies?you are.

True financial success only comes to those that master this concept. So ask yourself, ?Do you know what kind of Internet marketer you are??

Have your marketing experiences on the Net been positive, negative or mixed?

As you read through the seven levels of marketers provided below, I want you to know that at various times in my life, I have been at almost every single one of them. It was only as my knowledge and experience increased that I was able to upgrade to the level I am at today.

At some point while reading the descriptions of each level, you will probably recognize where you are or where other people are you know.

I recommend while reading you write down where you currently are as you discover your level, to help improve your awareness of your current strategy. This will also help you realize where you need to go.

Here are the seven levels of Internet marketers.

Level 1 ? The Mooches

The ?Mooches? are people at the very bottom level of marketing. They?re clueless and sit around wasting their time. Most are completely ignorant of the moneymaking opportunities available on the Web. These people spend their time whining about their financial status without taking the time to evaluate what they need to do to get ahead.

Most Mooches don?t have a clue about Internet marketing. If you ask them what the Internet is for, they?ll say, ?to chat? or ?to e-mail friends? or even better, ?to watch porn?. You know, something useless.

Lever 2 ? The Wanna-Be

The ?Wanna-Be? has ambition, but not enough. They wander around in the dark looking under stones for a magic treasure box. They want to make money, but don?t have a clue how. They get sucked into ridiculous scams and waste their money on garbage ideas that won?t get them anywhere. They need to get smart quick about where they need to go to turn their life around.

Most Wanna-Be marketers have heard of the Internet and know people who make money on the Net, so they are easily excited about opportunities. Unfortunately they spend most of their money on MLM and other moneymaking scams rather than chasing real opportunities.

Lever 3 ? The Pretend To Be

The ?Pretend To Be? is living a lie. They pretend to work hard, to do what it takes to get where they need to be. But they don?t actually DO anything. Most are perfectionists, worried about getting it right the first time. They don?t realize just how much they can learn even by making a few mistakes.

Most Pretenders are waiting for the perfect time to start a new business. They don?t realize the perfect time is NOW. They talk talk talk about starting an Internet business but lack the guts necessary to DO IT. Many have successful offline businesses and spend lots of their hard earned money attending seminars and buying e-books about Internet marketing.

A good example of a Pretender is a successful overworked doctor who spends $20,000 on info-products but doesn?t develop a website. The Pretender doesn?t understand a key principle of this industry? You don?t have to get it right the first time; you just have to get started.

Level 4 ? The Newbie

The ?Newbie? is on their way to the fast track, they just lack experience. They have the desire to learn and grow, and may have the skill and talent necessary. They jump into opportunities with all the freshness one would expect of an eager beaver in the industry. They have done some homework, but lack the technical know how to get where they need to be.

There is hope for the Newbie. They feel excited and probably have read a few books about Internet marketing. Unlike Pretenders, they are willing to invest a lot of time in themselves. They will buy resale rights, reprint rights, licenses of many products? but lack the know how about how to market them.

Level 5 ? The Marketer

The ?Marketer? is well on their way to victory. They are making some money. They are strong marketers. They still lack the ambition necessary however to get off their butt and do what they need to do to truly realize victory.

Most Marketers have a website or a moneymaker but don?t have a business. They posses a strong understanding of marketing, copywriting and traffic generation and have a clear sense of what their audience is looking for. They are often leaders within their niche and make good money.

They enjoy a comfortable living. The problem is they are sitting on their ?ass-ets? and thinking what they have accomplished so far is all they can do. They fail to realize there is more opportunity available if they are willing to put in a little extra effort.

Level 6 ? The Master

The ?Master? is a smart marketing agent. They are making good money, and can teach others how to do the same. Most are visionaries, charismatic leaders who have a good handle on everything they need to succeed. They?ll fail only if they stop thinking about what more they can do. There is always more success just around the corner, if only one takes the time to look.

The Master marketers are millionaires, or at least making 6 figures a year. They are leaders in their industry. They are well versed in direct response marketing and can teach others. They have a vast amount of knowledge both online and offline and experience working in different businesses.

Most have experience working with adversity. They are high performance people who make great mentors. Most understand traffic conversion and traffic generation.

The Master marketer can get into any niche and make money, even if they don?t have any affinity or experience working with a niche.

They recognize the Internet is nothing more than a medium they can use to make money. They integrate online and offline marketing. They posses a solid understanding of copywriting, testing and tacking. They build a team of experts around them and delegate responsibility to talented people.

Level 7 ? The Entrepreneur

This is where everyone should aspire to be. The Entrepreneur has already achieved true victory. They are the models that others try to mimic and follow. If you ask me, your goals should be no less than achieving ?The Entrepreneur ? statue.

These are the multimillionaires, the master sales people and the master marketers. They have a strong team of talented people with different expertise surrounding them.

These are the people taking their companies public. They are raising capital and selling to the public? to shareholders? but not to customers.

They have an exit strategy in place before starting something new. They recognize the purpose of a business is to sell it or put it on autopilot so they can enjoy their lives to the fullest. This is where you want to be.

Example: ebay.com, google.com, yahoo.com? etc.

So now I ask you? Which one are you? Which one do you want to be? The people you know, which level are they at? Are they realizing their dreams? Why or why not?

You have to ask questions, have a firm understanding of where you are NOW and where you WANT to be soon if you want to succeed. Don?t just charge ahead blindly, but don?t sit on you?re ass either.

If you want to succeed, take charge of your life and your financial future. Find out where you are, and what steps you need to take to be where you want to be.

Get Your Products And Business Seen Through Video Marketing

Get Your Products And Business Seen Through Video Marketing

A good way to promote a business is through video marketing. To use this method properly, you must research thoroughly. The article below contains tips and tricks to use when beginning your video marketing campaign.

When it comes to video marketing, the early bird always wins. Therefore, it?s vital that you respond first to a newsworthy event. This will help you get more views on your video, and ultimately more customers. Develop a feel for what items are newsworthy.

Your best bet for creating a successful video clip is to aim for short and sweet. Most people don?t have the attention span to sit there waiting to get what they?re looking for. If you do have to make a longer video, break it up into separate sections, which is easier to digest for the viewer.

TIP! Include a screenshot of your website in your video. This lets viewers see how the site is formatted.

Video marketing is nothing to fear. It?s possible to create effective, appealing videos without A-list stars and pricey equipment, a tripod and camera are sufficient. You can use the recording time to demonstrate your manufacturing process to the audience or sit there and demonstrate a particular product or service.

You should make as many videos as you can. New videos should be posted regularly so that your customers will expect new content from you. That means you also have wide exposure among new people who may happen upon your individual videos.

Video marketing gives you a way to keep in contact with your audience. Request that clients ask you questions then respond in video form. Offer deals or prizes to anyone whose question is answered in the video.

TIP! One tip that works well for new video marketers is to think of a great title for your videos. Viewers will be drawn to your videos if they see interesting or relevant titles.

You can edit your videos when they are placed on YouTube so you should use this to your advantage. For example, you can annotate your video. Take advantage of this feature by including links, promotional offers and appealing coupon codes that are relevant to the product or service you are marketing.

Give your customers some awesome content and your video may go viral. It doesn?t require a fantastic camera to get viewed by millions of people. In most cases, the only thing needed to entice an online user to watch your video is an indication that it can offer valuable insight or solutions. Purchase the best quality video camera you can comfortably afford to produce your video content.

Keep your videos relatively short: no more than 10 or 20 minutes. You may need all of that time if you are showing your audience how a certain product works. If you?re just updating folks, do it in 10 minutes or less.

TIP! If product promotion is something you need, video marketing can be a helpful conduit. Visual learners will appreciate the opportunity to see a product in use.

Make sure your videos have been optimized. Whenever you upload videos to different sites, make sure each video has a different title and description. You should put keywords in there, as well. Include your contact information with each video post to ensure your visitors can easily contact you.

Spending a lot of money and time on a video does not mean it will yield better results. High production values don?t necessarily translate to good returns. A lot of popular companies have used simple video to reap marketing gold.

TIP! Video marketing is characterized by the short period in which you must grab the attention of viewers. The 15 seconds that start your video must count.

As mentioned at the start of this article, a great way to get your business and/or products known is by using video marketing. However, you have to know what to do. Put the tips from this article to good use to be successful with video marketing.

Culture war in Israel targets ultra-Orthodox Jews

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A cultural war has erupted between Israel's rising political star and his ultra-Orthodox rivals.

Newly minted Finance Minister Yair Lapid, hugely popular for opposing the long-standing preferential treatment enjoyed by the religious minority, is moving swiftly to slash state handouts to large families, compel lifelong seminary students to work and join the army, and remove funding for schools that don't teach math, science and English.

The religious ? labeled "parasites" by one Lapid emissary this week ? are crying foul. But they appear helpless, at least in the short run, to stop Lapid from pressing his agenda.

For most of the last three decades, the country's small ultra-Orthodox minority sat in governing coalitions, securing vast budgets for religious schools and automatic exemptions from mandatory military service for tens of thousands of young men in full-time religious studies.

Tapping into widespread resentment over these expensive perks, Lapid made a strong showing in January elections. His new Yesh Atid, or There is a Future, party finished second in the voting, turning him into the newest star of Israeli politics and propelling him to a senior position in the governing coalition.

The religious parties, meanwhile, were pushed into the opposition.

Lapid, facing a yawning deficit, has moved quickly to drastically slash budgets favoring the ultra-Orthodox.

"I say, let there be war," Lapid said in a speech Wednesday.

According to a draft of planned reforms viewed by The Associated Press, the Finance Ministry has proposed cutting in half government subsidies to religious schools that do not teach a core curriculum including math, science and English, and boosting funding for schools that do. It also seeks to allow subsidies for child day care only if both parents work ? an effort to entice ultra-Orthodox men who study religious texts full time to join the job market.

A parliamentary committee headed by Yesh Atid Cabinet Minister Yaakov Peri also proposes cutting 30 percent of funding to ultra-Orthodox religious seminaries ? roughly $195 million ? and introducing legislation to end most military draft exemptions, Israeli media reported this week.

A spokesman for Peri declined comment, and Boaz Stembler, spokesman of the Finance Ministry, said the draft budget proposal is not final.

Lapid, whose late father led a secular-rights party a decade ago, has said the benefits the ultra-Orthodox have accumulated are unsustainable.

"If hundreds of thousands of healthy people do not work, and live on pensions arranged for them by means of immoral political agreements, then we have sold the interests of the working man, and we must change this," Lapid told a Tel Aviv conference this week.

Lapid sparred with ultra-Orthodox lawmaker Moshe Gafni during a budget debate on Monday, accusing Gafni, who headed the parliament's finance committee in the previous government, of causing the huge deficit.

"You are no longer chairman of the finance committee, because we are fed up with taking orders from you," Lapid said.

Gafni criticized Lapid for issuing statements on Facebook on Saturdays, the Jewish sabbath, when religious Jews refrain from working and using the Internet. Government officials, even those who are not religious, have long refrained from making public statements on the sabbath.

"I don't tell you what to do on the sabbath and you don't tell me what to do on the sabbath," Lapid replied.

He then accused the ultra-Orthodox of encouraging large birth rates in order to take advantage of state child subsidies.

"The body that is responsible for funding children is called their parents," he said.

Lapid's deputy, Mickey Levy, appeared on an ultra-Orthodox radio station on Wednesday in hopes of smoothing over relations with the religious. But when the interview became tense, Levy called ultra-Orthodox Jews "parasites."

Levy immediately apologized and said he had suffered a slip of the tongue in a heated moment.

Israel's mainstream media has largely supported Lapid, a former newspaper columnist and TV talk show host.

"How long have we waited for a finance minister in the Israeli government to stand up and tell those dignified parliament members that they no longer hold the reins to the state of Israel," Yael Paz-Melamed wrote in the daily Maariv. A Haaretz editorial cartoon depicted ultra-Orthodox lawmakers bandaged and bruised from the political browbeating.

Religious lawmakers accused Lapid of inciting against them.

"Since the January elections, new politics have brought unprecedented displays of hatred and polarization," Arieh Deri, leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas Party, wrote in the Yediot Ahronot newspaper Thursday. "As elected public officials, it is our duty to unite the nation, not divide it."

For now, however, the tide seems to have turned against the religious.

In recent days, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a longtime ally of the religious, gave preliminary support to a plan to break the Orthodox monopoly at the Western Wall, said Benjamin Rutland, a spokesman for the Jewish Agency, the quasi-governmental body drafting the plan.

The proposal calls for building a section for mixed gender prayers. Under Orthodox customs, men and women pray separately.

On Thursday, a Jerusalem court ruled that police should stop arresting members of a liberal women's Jewish prayer group for praying at the wall wearing religious garb that Orthodox Judaism permits for men only.

The ultra-Orthodox have shown signs of bowing to the pressure. A front-page notice published in the ultra-Orthodox newspaper Yated Neeman called on religious studies students to cooperate with military draft notices and report to draft centers, but not to sign any commitments to military service while negotiations are under way.

Avraham Diskin, a Hebrew University political scientist, said the ultra-Orthodox seem doomed in the short term. "They lost a lot of power and a lot of influence because they are not in the government anymore," he said.

But in the long run, he said the ultra-Orthodox will likely bounce back as they figure out a way to work with Lapid, who sees himself as a future prime minister. He also said the hostile rhetoric against the religious could backfire if the atmosphere turns too toxic.

Meir Porush, a prominent ultra-Orthodox politician, predicted that Yesh Atid would suffer the same fate as Shinui, the secular-rights party led by Lapid's father, Joseph, a decade ago. Shinui captured 15 parliamentary seats in 2003 elections, making it one of the largest factions in parliament, only to flame out within three years.

"Shinui had 15 seats and disappeared after one term," Porush told Army Radio. "I think the same might be for Yair because there is no way that the hatred between religious and secular can be maintained for a long time."

BancBox Launches ?First' Automatic Escrow Service Aimed At Crowd Funding Platforms

Screen Shot 2013-04-25 at 18.33.04Back in June last year BancBox, a payment services platform similar to Stripe, went further with a platform allowing developers to build a lot of different payment services. As cofounder Sanj Goyle claimed at the time: ?PayPal could be built on top of our platform." Now it has launched BancBox Crowd, which - as far as we can tell - is the first independent escrow service aimed at crowd funding portals which operate on equity, debt or revenue share models.

How a Quaker missionary from Philly became India's Johnny Appleseed

Samuel Evans Stokes?spent years trying to persuade his neighbors in the Himalayas to grow apples, giving away plants freely until?locals took to apple farming and Indians took to Red Delicious.

A community hall in rural India is not the place you would expect to find a garlanded portrait or statue of a Quaker missionary from Philadelphia. But both those things can be found at the farmers? hall in Thanedar, the ?apple bowl? of the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh in India.

Every farmer here can ? and will ? tell you about Samuel Evans Stokes, or Satyanand Stokes as he came to be known. He was an American missionary who settled in this area in the early 20th century, participated in India?s struggle for independence as a co-traveller of Mahatma Gandhi, and became the Johnny Appleseed of the northwestern Himalayas.

Stokes seeded a horticultural revolution when he planted five saplings of Red Delicious ? bought from the Starks Brothers nursery in Louisiana ? on his farm here in 1916, and helped convert locals to apple farming.

Stokes?s extraordinary journey began in turn-of-the-19th -century Philadelphia where, at a church meeting, he heard an American doctor talk about working with lepers in India. Inspired, this son of a wealthy Quaker family (the founders of the elevator manufacturers, Stokes and Parish Machine Company) gave up his post-graduate studies at Cornell University and joined the doctor on a steamship to Bombay in 1904.

For a time, according to family accounts, Stokes worked at the doctor?s home for lepers in the plains. He fell ill and was sent to recuperate in the hills near Shimla, then the summer capital of the British Raj, at a cantonment village called Kotgarh.

Smitten by Kotgarh ? which Rudyard Kipling called ?mistress of the hills? ? Stokes stayed on. He experimented with renunciation, living in a cave like an Indian sadhu, and founded the Brotherhood of Imitation of Jesus, traveling from village to village preaching. A few years later, he married an Indian woman, bought a former tea estate in Thanedar, and focused on farming. ?In 1914, he took local soil samples to America, returning with Red Delicious stocks.

Stokes spent years trying to persuade his neighbors to grow apples, giving away plants freely, says Vidya Stokes, who married Samuel Stokes?s son, Lal Chand, and is the current horticulture minister of Himachal Pradesh.

Initially, few farmers listened, she said. They knew only the cooking apples the British had brought ? Granny Smith and Pippin varieties that were too sour for Indian tastes.?

Stokes taught the boys in the school he established how to graft the plants, says Vidya Stokes. ?Their parents were skeptical, so the boys planted the saplings on the borders of their family farms,? she says.

When the first crops of Red Delicious came, however, ?everyone came to see,? she says. ?The apples were sweet. People realized they could make money from this.?

And they did ? Himachal?s apple orchards are valued today at around $550 million and provide a livelihood to more than 100,000 farmers.

Farming wasn?t the only way in which Samuel Stokes sought to help society, however. A believer in racial equality and social justice, he campaigned successfully to end a colonial system of forced labor in the hills and joined the Indian freedom struggle: signing petitions, engaging in debates on strategy with Gandhi and other nationalists, and adopting Indian clothes.

In 1921, he was the only non-Indian to be invited by Gandhi to sign a nationalist manifesto calling on Indians to quit government service ? he signed ? and was imprisoned for six months on charges of sedition.

In his later years, Samuel Stokes became more contemplative. In 1932, he and his family converted to Hindusim and changed his name to Satyanand. The temple he built ? without idols ? as well as Stokes?s home can still be seen today on his 200-acre estate in Thanedar. Most of Stokes descendants now live in America. ?

Stokes?s portrait also hangs in the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in New Delhi, alongside pictures of Mahatma Gandhi and other leaders of the Indian independence movement.

But it?s the farmers of Himachal Pradesh who remember him ? as the man who transformed the region and their lives ? with apples from America.

Facebook and romantic relationships

Apr. 23, 2013 ? A Western Illinois University faculty member who published a study about Facebook and narcissism last year has authored another study about Facebook and romantic relationships.

WIU Department of Communication Assistant Professor Christopher Carpenter, with his co-author Erin Spottswood (Cornell University), have authored, "Exploring romantic relationships on social networking sites using the self-expansion model," which will appear in the July 2013 journal issue of Computers in Human Behavior. According to Carpenter, in the study, the co-authors found the more past romantic relationships the participants had, the more interests they listed in their Facebook profiles.

"I predicted this relationship because other research suggested that part of romantic relationship development involves adopting new interests and behaviors from one's partner," he said. "I also found that people who report appearing in more photos with their partners on Facebook and who regularly tag their partner in their status updates tend to have closer romantic relationships."

In humans, the self-expansion model -- per a seminal study authored by State University of New York, Stony Brook, Psychology Professor Arthur Aron and Elaine Aron, author of the book, "The Highly Sensitive Person" -- asserts the desire to grow is a key motivation. One of the key sources of this need to expand one's self is derived from romantic relationships.

Carpenter said he studies humans' interactions on Facebook and social networks because the online networks offer a unique window into people's lives.

"We can't follow people around with a tape recorder getting a record of what they say all day. Facebook, on the other hand, offers us the chance to see one part of that record. We can see how often people interact with their romantic partners on Facebook, what they say to each other and how they present themselves on their profiles," he explained. "As for this specific study, I had read about self-expansion theory and I began wondering if we ever truly cut ties with someone when we break up. We might not see that person anymore, but when we develop a relationship with someone, we take on some of their interests and traits and, in many cases, hang on to them long after we break up. Facebook offered a unique way of examining the extent to which those traces of past relationships remain in our profiles."

Carpenter said the study's sample included 276 respondents who answered questions about their relationship histories and social networking sites uses, while a subset of the sample (149 participants) answered additional questions about their current romantic partners.

In addition to receiving wide media attention about his 2012 study, "Narcissism on Facebook: Self-promotional and Anti-social Behavior" (published in the journal, Personality and Individual Differences, March 2012), Carpenter served as an invited Oxford Union Society speaker on the motion, "This House Believes Social Media has Successfully Reinvented Social Activism," in England in May last year.

Rivers act as 'horizontal cooling towers' for power plants, study finds

Apr. 22, 2013 ? Running two computer models in tandem, scientists from the University of New Hampshire have detailed for the first time how thermoelectric power plants interact with climate, hydrology, and aquatic ecosystems throughout the northeastern U.S. and show how rivers serve as "horizontal cooling towers" that provide an important ecosystem service to the regional electricity sector -- but at a cost to the environment.

The analysis, done in collaboration with colleagues from the City College of New York (CCNY) and published online in the current journal Environmental Research Letters, highlights the interactions among electricity production, cooling technologies, hydrologic conditions, aquatic impacts and ecosystem services, and can be used to assess the full costs and tradeoffs of electricity production at regional scales and under changing climate conditions.

Lead authors of the study are Robert Stewart of the UNH Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space (EOS) and Wilfred Wollheim of the department of natural resources and environment and EOS.

Thermoelectric power plants boil water to create steam that in turn drives turbines to produce electricity. They provide 90 percent of the electricity consumed nationwide and an even a greater percentage in the Northeast -- a region with a high density of power plants.

Cooling the waste heat generated during the process requires that prodigious volumes of water be withdrawn and makes the thermoelectric sector the largest user of freshwater in the U.S. -- withdrawing more than the entire, combined agricultural sector. Water withdrawals are either evaporated in cooling towers or returned to the river at elevated temperatures. Rivers can help mitigate these added heat loads through the ecosystem services of conveyance, dilution, and attenuation -- essentially acting as horizontal cooling towers as water flows downstream.

Says Stewart, a research scientist in the EOS Earth Systems Research Center, "Our modeling shows that, of the waste heat produced during the production of electricity, roughly half is directed to vertical, evaporative cooling towers while the other half is transferred to rivers."

The study also shows that, of the waste heat transferred to rivers, only slightly more than 11 percent wafts into the atmosphere with the rest delivered to coastal waters and the ocean.

"We were surprised to find that relatively little of the heat to rivers is exchanged back to the atmosphere," notes Wollheim, an assistant professor and co-director of the Water Systems Analysis Group at EOS. Wollheim adds, "Reliance on riverine ecosystem services to dispense waste heat alters temperature regimes, which impacts fish habitat and other aquatic ecosystem services."

The researchers quantified the various dynamics using a spatially distributed hydrology and water temperature model developed at UNH known as the Framework for Aquatic Modeling in the Earth System, or FrAMES model, coupled with the Thermoelectric Power and Thermal Pollution Model developed by collaborators at CCNY.

The combined models showed that there are roughly 4,700 river miles in the region potentially impacted by power plants. The study found that, in general, the impact to river temperatures, and thus fish habitat, is "considerable" and disruptions in river flow "minimal," in part because so many of the region's power plants are located well down river near coastal areas.

But the study also noted that in the face of changing climate and increasing energy demand, "it is essential to assess the capacity and associated environmental trade-offs of heat regulating ecosystem services that support the electricity sector."

Indeed, last summer a reactor at the Millstone nuclear power plant in Waterford, Conn. was shut down because the water in Long Island Sound was too warm to cool it -- something utterly unanticipated when the plant was designed in the 1960s. And in July 2012, a nuclear plant in Illinois had to obtain special permission to continue operations because its cooling water pond reached 102 degrees in the wake of low rainfall and high air temperatures.

By means of the study, notes Wollheim, "We can better understand the unintended consequences to other ecosystem services as we rely on rivers to support generation of electricity. Integrative, regional approaches will be needed to help plan as society adapts to changing climate and hydrology while demand for power continues to increase."

The work was funded by the National Science Foundation through the Earth System Modeling Program and NSF's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program, and by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
