Self enhancement and adoring oneself is not a case of shouting to the whole humankind you are ideal and you are the most excellent. It is the virtue of recognition and contentment. When we start to enhance ourselves, we then begin to feel at ease and blissful.

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (AP) ? The Secret Service said Wednesday it is investigating the reported theft of copies of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's federal tax records during a break-in at an accounting office in Franklin. Someone claiming responsibility demanded $1 million not to make them public.

An anonymous letter sent to Romney's accounting firm and political offices in Tennessee and published online sought $1 million in hard-to-trace Internet currency to prevent the disclosure of his tax filings, which have emerged as a key focus during the 2012 presidential race. Romney released his 2010 tax returns and a 2011 estimate in January, but he has refused to disclose his returns from earlier years.

Romney's accounting firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, said there was no evidence that any Romney tax files were stolen.

"At this time there is no evidence that our systems have been compromised or that there was any unauthorized access to the data in question," PricewaterhouseCoopers spokesman Chris Atkins said.

In Washington, Secret Service spokesman Edwin Donovan confirmed the agency was investigating. The Romney campaign declined to comment, referring all questions to the accounting firm.

Franklin police said there were no recent alarms or break-ins reported at the site. "We've had nothing from that address in August," Police Lt. Charles J. Warner said.

There was no sign of forced entry at the five-story building that housed the accounting firm's local office, not far from the Cool Springs Galleria, a large mall about 20 miles south of Nashville.

The building does not restrict access during business hours and has no guard. After-hours access to the doors and elevators appear to be controlled by keycard. A spokeswoman for the building manager, Spectrum Properties, said the company would not speculate on the burglary claim.

"All of the tenants operate independently and the building is highly secured," the spokeswoman, Beth Courtney, said.

The data theft was claimed in letters left with political party offices in Franklin and disclosed in several Tennessee-area newspapers. Jean Barwick, the executive director of the Williamson County Republican Party, said employees in the GOP office found a small package on Friday with a hand-written address. The package contained a letter and a computer flash drive, she said.

Peter Burr, the chairman of the county's Democratic Party, said he received a version of the letter and a thumb drive on Aug. 27.

"I have no way of knowing this is real or not," he said. "I doubt it is, but I suppose it's conceivable."

An anonymous posting on a file-sharing website said the returns were stolen Aug. 25 from the accounting firm's office. After "all available 1040 tax forms for Romney were copied," the posting said, flash drives containing encrypted copies of his pre-2010 tax records were sent to the firm and to Republican and Democratic party offices.

The group threatened to divulge the tax files by late September unless it was paid $1 million.

Barwick and Burr said they turned over the materials to the Secret Service.

"The agents said there wasn't a whole lot they could say, but they agreed that bizarre stuff during campaign season isn't exactly unusual," Burr said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? God is back in the Democratic platform and people rooting for President Barack Obama hope the dazzle is back in him.

With war ending, the health care system recast and the creaky economy overshadowing all, Obama takes the stage of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday to appeal for a second term before a huge prime-time audience. He's got several tough acts to follow ? his wife Michelle's crowd-swooning speech of a few days ago, former President Bill Clinton's rollicking turn on stage Wednesday night and his own soaring oratory of four years ago.

Clinton, the one-time "comeback kid," offered a rousing defense of Obama's economic stewardship in a speech setting up Obama's moment to come. "He inherited a deeply damaged economy, put a floor under the crash, began the long hard road to recovery and laid the foundation for a more modern, more well-balanced economy that will produce millions of good new jobs," said Clinton ? the last president to see sustained growth, in the 1990s. "Conditions are improving and if you'll renew the president's contract, you will feel it."

He also preached bipartisanship and a pullback from politics as "blood sport" ? this near the end of back-to-back conventions that feasted on rhetorical red meat and even as he ripped the Republican agenda as a throwback to the past, a "double-down on trickle-down" economics that assumes tax cuts for the wealthy will help everyone down the ladder.

Obama watched Clinton's speech from backstage, then strolled out and embraced him, bringing happy roars from the crowd in his first convention appearance and making for a spirited ending to a trying day for Democrats.

After passing their platform a day earlier in a smoothly scripted show of unity, Democrats reopened it to restore a reference to God that had been stripped out in earlier deliberations.

Republican rival Mitt Romney called quick attention to the omission, branding it as evidence that the Democrats are a "party that is increasingly out of touch with the mainstream." White House aides said Obama himself ordered the party to get God back in. The platform also was altered to declare that Jerusalem "is and will remain the capital of Israel," a view at odds with a carefully neutral U.S. policy but in tune with campaign sensibilities.

Citing a chance of thunderstorms, convention organizers scrapped plans for Obama to speak to an enormous crowd in a 74,000-seat outdoor stadium and shoehorned the event under the roof of the convention arena, holding up to 15,000. That meant no opportunity to reprise the massive show of support, excitement ? and on-scene voter registration ? from Obama's 2008 acceptance speech before 84,000 in Denver. Republicans said Democrats made the switch because they feared the sight of empty seats.

For Obama, the evening speech provided one of his best opportunities not just to persuade undecided voters to swing his way in a tight election but to put fire in the belly of his supporters and get them to come out on Election Day. That wasn't an issue in 2008, but the anemic recovery has raised questions about the motivation of Democrats as Obama seeks to become the first president since the Great Depression to win re-election with joblessness so high.

It was no accident the president devoted many stops on a pre-convention tour of battleground states to campus crowds of the sort that lifted him to the Democratic nomination and the presidency last time.

"Barack's challenge here is to sort of wake up America and make them realize how serious this election is," Democratic Rep. Sam Farr of California said in an interview at the convention. Judging from his town hall meetings in August, when only 15 or 20 people showed up instead of the usual hundreds, there is a "big apathy about politics right now," regardless of party.

Farr added, "If we have an apathetic America, I'm terrified."

Motivation was not an issue in the convention hall, at least not when Clinton spoke.

The hall rocked with cheers as Clinton strode onstage to Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop," his 1992 campaign theme song, and he held the crowd rapt as he drifted off his prepared remarks for about 50 minutes.

He accused Republicans of proposing "the same old policies that got us into trouble in the first place" and led to a near financial meltdown. Those, he said, include efforts to provide "tax cuts for higher-income Americans, more money for defense than the Pentagon wants and ... deep cuts on programs that help the middle class and poor children."

"As another president once said, 'There they go again,'" Clinton said, paraphrasing Ronald Reagan, who often uttered "There you go again" as a rebuke to Democrats.

"In Tampa," said Clinton, "the Republican argument against the president's re-election was pretty simple: We left him a total mess, he hasn't finished cleaning it up yet, so fire him and put us back in."

Clinton's speech marked the seventh consecutive convention in which he has spoken to party delegates, and the latest twist in a relationship with Obama that has veered from frosty to friendly. The two men clashed in 2008, when Obama outran Hillary Rodham Clinton, the former president's wife, for the Democratic presidential nomination. Hillary Clinton, then a New York senator and now Obama's secretary of state, was in East Timor as the party met but made a cameo appearance on the huge convention screens in a video that celebrated the 12 Democratic female senators now in office.

Party leaders did their best to draw as little attention as possible to the changes in the platform, making the switch even before the prayer that opened the second night of the convention.

They restored wording from the 2008 platform calling for a government that "gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential."

The switch on Jerusalem puts it in line with what advisers said was the president's personal view, if not the policy of his administration. "Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel," it says. "The parties have agreed that Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths."

Three times Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the convention chairman, called for a voice vote on the changes and each time the yes and no votes seemed to balance each other out. On the third attempt, Villaraigosa ruled the amendments were approved ? triggering boos from many in the audience.

Review: Sony Xperia sola

The NFC tags and floating touch technology of the Xperia sola are a bonus; too bad about the outdated OS though.

Sony's latest addition to its portfolio of Android-powered smartphones, the Xperia sola, comes with two NFC SmartTags touted to simplify the everyday experiences of smartphone users. The handset debuts Sony's floating touch technology, which allows users to navigate the Web without actually touching the screen.

According to Calum MacDougall, head of Xperia marketing for Sony Mobile Communications, the Xperia sola ?is perfect for consumers looking for ease-of-use and the best in entertainment in a smart and innovative smartphone?.

Look and feel

After about a minute of unsuccessful attempts to slide the screen of the Xperia sola, I learnt that the little step at the bottom of the handset is merely a design decision by the company. I asked friends for suggestions as to what the little step was intended for and the best suggestion I got what that it is a place to rest your fingers between writing messages. Hmm.

My confusion aside, one of my initial reactions to the Xperia sola was how light it is. At 107g, the plastic-bodied sola fits comfortably in the hand and is quite slim at 9.9mm. The sola is also the perfect size to pop into a pocket.

Interface and performance

The sola boasts a 3.7-inch display powered by Mobile Bravia Engine, which is perfect for Web browsing but gamers may find it a tad small. For some unfathomable reason, the Xperia sola, like the Xperia P, runs on the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) platform, with an update to the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system available later in 2012. Although intuitive, it's annoying that users have to buy a phone only to update it a few months later, especially with the introduction of Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) making even Ice Cream Sandwich borderline outdated.

The mid-range Android smartphone comes with standard Sony widgets that one can move around, depending on use preferences. Call quality is good but the volume level of the earpiece could be improved.

Features/multimedia

As has come to be expected from Sony, the camera on the Xperia sola does not disappoint; even in dim lighting, it produces good shots. The handset features a 5MP camera with 16x digital zoom. There are a few drawbacks, however. The Xperia sola lacks a front-facing camera and the two-stage camera shutter key on the side requires a little too much effort to push. Images taken with the sola can be stored on the 8GB internal memory or on a microSD card. The device is also capable of recording 720p HD video. The sola is DLNA compatible, and as a result, sharing of media such as music, photos and videos between consumer devices is easy.

The music player has a few interesting extras that allow users to search for music videos on YouTube and to look up lyrics or artist information straight from the player. With xLOUD and 3D surround sound audio technology, listening is a pleasure. But I must make mention of the preloaded music ? Brett5000's Globalization and Static Space by Erica Sunn ? nope, I've never heard of them either.

Floating touch technology

Floating touch technology allows users to highlight links while browsing without actually touching the display. Although it is nifty to use, to be honest, I found this feature a little counter-intuitive. To not touch the screen on a touch-screen smartphone seems odd. It also didn't always work as smoothly as I would have liked, but this may just take some getting used to.

At present, the functionality of floating touch is limited, but Sony is planning to create other uses for the feature in the future.

NFC SmartTags

Pushing its NFC technology, Sony has thrown in two SmartTags with the Xperia sola. Users can program each tag with various settings and then simply swipe the handset over the tag to apply the settings to the phone. The Bedroom SmartTag, for example, will activate the alarm and silent mode when tapped. This is a quick way to make the sola function according to location and need.

The sola is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor, which performs well even when multitasking. The handset is 3G-, Bluetooth-, and WiFi-compatible.

Most of the preloaded apps, including all the basics that one would expect ? except Twitter ? add to the user experience. Free app and game downloads are available from Android Market.

Battery life

The Xperia sola is fitted with a 1.320mAh non-user-removable battery, which is below today's standards. Moderate users should be able to get through a day without charging, but heavy users will not be so lucky. The battery takes about two hours to charge, and when it is running low, a notification appears detailing exactly how much battery life is left and also offers a breakdown of how much of the battery is being used to do what.

In a nutshell

The NFC SmartTags and floating touch feature set the Xperia sola apart from similar mid-range smartphones. That said, if you have the extra money, I'd advise you spend a little more and get the Xperia P.

Phew: Jose Aldo walks away from motorcycle accident with just a few scratches

Jose Aldo was in a motorcycle accident in Rio de Janeiro over the weekend, and walked away. The UFC featherweight champ and main event star of upcoming UFC 153 had no issues after his motorcycle ran into a car.

According to Tatame and MMA Fighting, he suffered a swollen foot and some scratches, but that's not different from what he would encounter while training for his October bout with former UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar. To be on the safe side, his coach in Brazil ruled out any more motorcycle riding.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? President Barack Obama lampooned the just-completed Republican National Convention as better-suited to an era of black-and-white TV and " trickle-down, you're on your own" economics Saturday, and declared that Mitt Romney "did not offer a single new idea" to fix the economy.

"There was a lot of talk about hard truths and bold choices, but no one actually told you what they were," Obama said in Iowa, chuckling, as he set out on a three-day tour of battleground states in the run-up to his own convention. Later, Obama said, the Republican gathering was so rooted in the past, there should have been a rabbit-ears antenna on the convention hall.

Yet even the site of Obama's convention, Charlotte, N.C., served as an unwelcome reminder to the Democrats of an economy so weak that it threatens his chances for re-election.

The president carried North Carolina in 2008, but the state's unemployment rate is pegged at 9.6 percent, well higher than the nation's 8.3 percent and tied with next-door South Carolina for fifth from the bottom.

Obama's convention opens Tuesday at the Time Warner Cable arena with evening speeches by first lady Michelle Obama and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, the keynote speaker.

The president will be nominated for a new term on Wednesday, when former President Bill Clinton also will speak. Vice President Joe Biden delivers his own acceptance speech the same evening.

Obama's prime-time acceptance speech, to be delivered at the outdoor Bank of America Stadium, caps the convention on Thursday night. Aides predict a capacity crowd will hear the speech at the site, which has a capacity of nearly 74,000 for football.

Democrats are taking their turn in the convention spotlight just days after the Republicans met in Tampa, Fla., to nominate former Massachusetts Gov. Romney for the White House and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan to be vice president.

A parade of speakers in Tampa excoriated Obama's handling of the economy, which is struggling in the weakest recession recovery of the post-World War II era.

The economy has been the top-rated issue in opinion polls all year, and the president is eager to turn the focus onto Romney on that subject.

Republicans "will take us backwards," Obama said, to the age of "trickle-down, you're on your own" economics that begin with tax cuts for the rich but tax increases for the middle class.

The president made a brief detour to foreign policy in his speech.

"Gov. Romney had nothing to say about Afghanistan this week or the plans for the 33,000 troops who will have come home from the war by the end of this month," he said.

The Republican challenger "said ending the war in Iraq was tragic. I said we'd end that war and we did," Obama said.

Romney said late last year, in a veterans roundtable, "The precipitous withdrawal is unfortunate. It's more than unfortunate, I think it's tragic. It puts at risk many of the victories that were hard won by the men and women who served there."

Obama, pointing to successes, declared, "I said we'd take out bin Laden and we did."

His audience cheered the mention of the demise of the architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, who was killed in his hideout in Pakistan by U.S. Navy SEALs last year. Obama ordered the raid, and even Republicans credit him for the decision.

Romney campaigned in Ohio during the day ? the opening of the college football season ? and proclaimed it was time the country had a winning season after years of a sluggish economy and high unemployment.

Referring to the number of jobless in the country, Romney told his own cheering crowd, "If you have a coach that's zero and 23 million, you say it's time to get a new coach."

He also pledged to cut the federal deficit and "get us on track for a balanced budget."

Yet Romney has yet to produce a budget for public inspection. Nor did he mention that, as chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan wrote a plan projecting the deficit would decline each year from 2013 through 2017 but then begin an inexorable rise again. Additionally, the federal debt is projected to rise each year, from a current level of nearly $16 trillion to an estimated $25 trillion at the end of 2022.

Obama made Iowa his first stop on what his campaign billed as "The Road to Charlotte."

Obama spoke in Urbandale, outside Des Moines, on a sprawling 500-acre property. With barns, American flags and Obama banners all around, the late summer scene offered him the quintessential heartland backdrop. He later spoke at a rally in Sioux City.

He told the crowd Iowa was first on his schedule "because it was you, Iowa, who kept us going when the pundits were writing us off."

There was another reason, as well.

Polls make the state one of eight or so battlegrounds where the election is most likely to be decided. The president carried Iowa in 2008, and in an indication of the struggle he now faces, he has been lavishing time on it in recent weeks. He spent three days in August on a bus tour that traversed the state from west to east.

Following two stops in Iowa, Obama was flying to Colorado for a Sunday appearance before college students at the University of Colorado.

Obama's schedule for Monday includes an appearance in Toledo, Ohio, yet another battleground state, before a trip to Louisiana to inspect damage from Hurricane Isaac.

Romney visited Louisiana on Friday.

Television ratings for the final night of the Republican convention were lower than four years ago. The Nielsen Co. said an estimated 30.3 million viewers watched Thursday night's coverage of Romney's acceptance speech. That was down by one-fourth from 2008, when John McCain spoke on the final night of the Republican gathering in St. Paul., Minn.

NY teen killed on party bus mourned

NEW YORK (AP) ? Mourning the death of a beloved student in a gruesome accident, English teacher Jane Lynch spoke of the 16-year-old in a trembling voice. Friends sent sad Twitter messages expressing their affection for Daniel Fernandez, and hundreds of students gathered Saturday evening for a candlelight vigil at St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens.

The teen was killed after he stuck his head out of the emergency hatch of a double-decker bus and hit the underside of a highway overpass, authorities said. The Friday night accident followed warnings of a security guard on the bus who said he told the teen passengers repeatedly not to open the hatch.

"Sometimes kids don't recognize their own mortality," Lynch said, her voice quivering.

Fernandez was among 65 teens aboard the bus from New York City on its way to a Sweet 16 party in Garfield, N.J., said Steve Coleman, spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The accident happened as the bus crossed the George Washington Bridge on the way to New Jersey.

The teens were dancing and the bus had gotten hot, the security guard, Alex Franco, told the Daily News.

"I told them not to open the hatch, like three or four times, but kids, they don't understand," he said.

Franco said he had gone downstairs to tell the driver that it was getting too hot.

"Two, five minutes I was downstairs," he said.

But then he heard teenagers screaming, and he saw Fernandez on the floor of the bus. "There was so much blood everywhere," he told The New York Post.

Fernandez, who lived in Queens' Woodside neighborhood, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Calls to his family home Saturday in Queens rang unanswered.

Friends sent sad Twitter messages reacting to his death.

"Sitting here with your blood on my foot wishing this was all a bad dream. I love you so much dan you were there for me till the last second," wrote one student, who said she was forever scarred.

Students planned to wear blue on the first day of school to honor the teen.

Fernandez was going to be a junior at St. Francis Preparatory. He was a beloved student, said Lynch, who taught him last school year.

"He was an adorable, low-key kid, with a sweet smile," she said. "Kids loved him; he had lots of friends and was popular with the girls."

She said a group of students had a special last project, producing and appearing in a takeoff on the novel "Lord of the Flies," about a group of boys on a desert island who try to govern themselves, with disastrous results.

"He was very hands-on, he took the leadership role," said Elizabeth Gonzalez, a student teacher at St. Francis last year.

Fernandez played the villain in the video students posted on YouTube, she said.

In class, "he was very lively, and high-spirited," she said. "And he had so much potential in his writing."

The school said on its website that it shared in grief and shock over his death. A wake was set for Monday, the site said.

Designer Limousines, which operates the bus, expressed its "deepest heartfelt sympathy" to the teen's family. The company said it would conduct an internal investigation.

Seattle political consultant Blair Butterworth said the growth in Microsoft?s campaign spending follows national trends.

?They?re not the kingpins, but they?re by no means irrelevant,? he said.
